well i was thinking about buying one but whats stopping me is the hit-and-miss
quality with century and the keyhole problem. I have heard the main reason was the barrel are .223 with a 1:7 twist IS THAT TRUE? also heard that century fixed this keyhole problem is that also true?

thanks guys

I have a Century AK74 which shoots most ammo quite well. I have noticed an occasional keyhole with Wolf 70 grain but no where near what I'd call often so it may be some bad bullets rather than a barrel problem.

There was a keyhole issue with the Tantal's. A one point the wrong barrels were being put on them. From what I could find most beleive that Century was using 223 barrels.

The newer ones have had this issue resolved. Mine has a 1:8 twist barrel and has had no issues with keyholing. I have been running 70 grain Wolf through mine and it runs great.

I wanted a Tantal also. Heard/read about the .223 barrel/keyhole issues. Settled on a CAI stamped (Elk River rcvr) M74...for now. Got it new, at a show for a decent trade/$$$ deal. So far no issues, but only have a couple hundred rounds thru it. I like the round cause it's cheap and plentiful...now.

I have also seen a 5.45 AK from a more reputable manufacturer than Century have keyholing issues with 70 grain ammo. I think that the weight/barrel twist combination is just on the edge of what will work and a properly calibered 5.45mm barrel or the bullets may be just out of spec enough to create problems. (This has nothing to do with Century using .223 barrels, which was just a stupid, cheap idea.)

52 grain ammo fixed the problem with that 74, which reinforces my performance-edge theory for the heavier grain round.
