This article, + pix + video of the shooting of two Police Officers in NYC is interesting and riveting for showing the ability to keep to training under the most extreme situation: while wounded and continually being shot at. An analysis of the officers actions by a Detective-Instructor is likewise very interesting. (I couldn't get the video to work, maybe you can, but stills from the video are available.

That was a really good article. Being former LE, I have to commend those guys, especially Yan, for keeping a cool head and calling it in. Response time up there is amazing...a minute and a half! Where I come from it could be 5-10 minutes, or more, if you are on the north side of town.

Yeah, I spend much time in NYC. If you call a cop for an in-process violent crime, they are like lighting and there's a million of them.

I saw them cordon off a whole block with 40+ units + mobile command center for a suspect with gun - known violent felon - with a helicopter hovering, in less than 5 min of first cars arrival. A number of units were "Yellow Cabs" (the reason some Yellow Cabs with "empty" signs whiz by angry people with their hand out; these cabs are not interested in fares)

I think NYPD - JUST city cops, not including Port Authority or the dreaded Parking Police- number around 38,000. (The Parking Police seem to number more than the Red Chinese Army. $65: cheapest parking tkt. Or avoid that by parking in garage. Near where I stay: $600/mo)
