Police Kill Robber At Suburban Dunkin Donuts

(CBS) Midlothian, Ill. The alleged robber was shot several times by police Monday morning at a Dunkin Donuts on 14631 S. Pulaski Rd in Midlothian.

Police say 21-year-old Bobby Pounds climbed in the store through the drive-thru window, demanded money from the safe and hit one of the employees. He then proceeded to beat the second employee with his weapon. Midlothian Police say the employee received 19 staples and 9 stitches.

The first worker escaped and flagged down a patrol car. As the officers approached, they say Pounds raised his gun and pointed it at them.

According to the chief, the officer then “terminated the threat.” He could not say whether the offender fired his gun.

Pounds, a student and father of two was later was pronounced dead at Christ Hospital.

Officers were not hurt and are on paid administrative leave so they can receive counseling.

blurbs from other News articles:
The dead man's relatives and ministers said Bobby Pounds might have been the victim of "brute or excessive force" by police officers and called for an end to the "open season on young African-American men."

DeAndre Moore, Pounds' older brother, said what happened Sunday night "was straight out of character."

"He was striving to stay on the right track," Moore said as two female relatives sobbed loudly.

More than 20 family members gathered Monday at Midwest Memorial Chapel in Harvey to make funeral arrangements and challenge police to provide answers.

"We're not here today to argue innocence or guilt," said the Rev. Lance Davis, of New Zion Christian Fellowship in Dolton. "We're here to raise questions as to the amount of force used to murder an individual and to stop the open season on young African-American men in the community."

The Rev. Donald Luster, who was a youth leader for Pounds at Arc of the Covenant Baptist Church in Dolton, said police may have used "brute or excessive force" by shooting Pounds multiple times.

"How many times does it take to get a 6-foot, 140-pound male down," he asked.

Davis said the family planned to ask police to see the security video. They want to know if Pounds attempted to surrender and if an altercation with the employees spurred his behavior.
"We should get the whole story," Davis said.
I don't have problems with the immediate family's comments, after all he was their blood. I expect people to be upset when their loved one is killed, no matter how justly. What I get sick of is the media putting their words to print. What do they think it will accomplish? Oh, that's right, selling News Papers and Air time (the media is a business, 1st and foremost).

Midlothian Detective Sgt. Harold Kaufman said Monday he is "very, very confident" the officers' actions were appropriate after seeing the security video from the Dunkin' Donuts shop.

"The officers were at the right place at the right time," Kaufman said. "I honestly feel, from the beating (the victim) took, they saved his life by being there."

oh boy, here we go :D

we don't care about guilt or innocence, we only care about excessive force. Wow, just wow.

open season on the young african-american male. no, open season on armed robbers who assault their victims then point their weapon at police. Well, I needed a smile anyway

That rev donald luster is a moron shooting someone IS using brute force. You can't gently force someone when you shoot them There's not a pressure switch to turn down when you shoot them so you don't use too much force. It's not a water hose.

Why sweat it? The Media still assumes you can shoot a gun from a man's hand or shoot him "in the leg". Thank HCI and ilk for that. The cops done good.

the officer then “terminated the threat.”

I like that Quote. You point a firearm at an officer (when you are in commision of a crime) and you get dead.

"He was striving to stay on the right track,"

Okay, pistol wiping employees at a donut shop is "striving to stay on the right track". Thank goodness that he wasn't on the wrong track  .

We're here to raise questions as to the amount of force used

Hmmm, lets see, criminal pointed gun at officer, officer "terminates threat"... sounds about the right amount of force to me.

"brute or excessive force" by shooting Pounds multiple times.

"How many times does it take to get a 6-foot, 140-pound male down," he asked.

Depends on what he was on, as this quote by DeAndre Moore, the brother, tends to point toward the fact that he was on something:

was straight out of character

Providing that the information given is correct, I say that this was a good shoot, had it been by an LEO or one of the Employees.

I would love for the news stations to air the video of the robbery, beatings and shooting. That would prove or disprove the use of force.

Bolding, mine.

That doesn't happen here. Why would it happen if the vid aired on TV?
I don't disagree with airing it on TV... just doubt it'll "prove" anything to people that want to believe something, regardless of the evidence presented.

Rev Lance Davis, someone who is revered by his church members, should be careful of what he says... "open season on young African-American men" is a very irresponsible comment that can only provoke outrage over supposed racism. Very dangerous.

Trip-
Deep breaths, please.
When an officer apparently does the job well, we (almost) all cheer.

When he apparently doesn't, you claim, "We don't have all the facts yet. Y'all are Cop-Haters. Y'all have an 'Agenda'"
So, who's using a double standard? How'd ya feel if most non-LEO's came on and said, "Well wait a minute. We haven't seen the full video tape. We only have one side of the story. I'm not certain that cop was right to use deadly force."

Rejoice in the (probably) universal approval, based on less than "full information", Trip. Don't take comments out of context and turn this into another "TFL Persecutes Cops" thread. OK? OK? OK?
Rich

Rich, I didn't take Trips post that way at all...

+1. I thought the comment about "here" referred to the MSM and not showing a video of a perp. I did not read "here" as meaning TFL, specifically. I think he was simply saying that even if this reverend guy saw the video of this dirtbag robbing and assaulting people and pointing a gun at police, he still would make his stupid statements.

Another black "leader" refusing to admit that there is a big, big problem in the black community and it has nothing to do with what color he is, except to him. People like this only hurt those that they are supposed to be helping by refusing to accept responsibilty and transferring blame where it does not belong. Don't work to fix what is wrong. Blame someone else for your actions, it is not your fault, is the lesson taught and learned. I have come to expect no less from the "black" leaders. The good Rev. should be on his pulpit asking why a minute portion of the population is responsible for a huge portion of violent crime. Maybe he should be asking what his "community" is failing to do to stop the insanity. Maybe he will find the answer in the mirror, but I doubt he could find anything resembling truth through the cloud of racism infecting his brain.

Wonder why they didn't print an interview the mothers of the nameless employees that got beaten and threatened with a gun? What about stopping the open season on donut store clerks that are trying to EARN their money?

Another black "leader" refusing to admit that there is a big, big problem in the black community

Replace 'black' with 'democrat', 'republican', 'catholic', 'muslim', 'hollywood', 'mainstream media'... It's the us vs. them, not the black vs. not.

Wow.

I'll clarify what I meant, though I thought it was stated clearly - sorry for any confusion.

rapier444 stated a video would prove or disprove the use of force. Which I took to mean it would either calm and abate indignation among the masses (the Reverend and his community), or fan the flames.

I was merely disagreeing with his believe and here’s why:

In my experience, where discussion often involves viewing only a video - sometimes accompanied by an article - it’s been my observation that the video in no way proves or disproves the use of force. Lines are drawn, people pick sides, and there is usually little progress in the debate.

People will generally view “evidence” with a preconceived notion (especially in a community which feels oppressed by law enforcement, evident by their claims of “open season”), and their final opinion based on the evidence will usually err on the side of their original concept.

This was my one and only point. YMMV - my .02 - IIRC - RKBA - WWJBD - et cetera.

Not once did I foam at the mouth while sneering fingers constructed my original post, and I assure you my breaths were calm and of an even frequency. If you feel I’m attempting to instigate some sort of war – then you're definitely misinterpreting my objective, and connotation.

I’ll take “you” as meaning the collective “you”. If not, I assure you that I’ve been on both sides of that argument based on my opinion of whatever video or article I’ve reviewed, i.e., on a per incident basis. I don’t believe I have a default setting one way, or another, with regards to police action.

Hay, I wanna know why they just don't come out and say they wasted the dude 'cuz he was stealing all the powdered ones & squishing the jelly donuts. :D

Seriously, the cops done good this time. Only thing I could add is maybe that particular officer should be transferred to teach the firearms class at the academy. He obviously can hit what he aims at. Kudos.

"He was striving to stay on the right track," Moore said as two female relatives sobbed loudly.

Bullhocky. One does not 'strive to stay on the right track'. One either is or is not. It's not that hard.

Pistolwhipping a Dunkin' Donuts employee falls in the 'is not' catagory.
