Police only clips

Is it true it is illegal to have hi-cap mags that read "government or police use only", if you are a private citizen? Thanks, Too Tall

If you don't meet the criteria, it's unlawful to possess them. Have no idea if anyone's been prosecuted.

I wouldn't have one....

Welcome, Too Tall.

Yes, you are in violation of the law to possess these 'clips', properly known as magazines. Only Diane Fienstien and bad war movies refer to them as 'clips' (Diane will usually wail "Killer Clips" in a dry, shrill voice for effect).

Hate to climb on the soapbox here on you, but you're a perfect example of the problem with these nonsensical gun control laws. Too many laws that do nothing but contradict and confuse, pretty soon the average Joe is violating some law. You wouldn't know if you didn't keep up on this stuff or ask.

Good luck. TFL is an excellent source of info.

IIRC, (and I'm dusting off a 6-year old memory bank here trying to recall the sheet BATF sent to our shop at the time of The Great Mag Gelding of '94) "Restricted" non-gelded mags (that's 'High-capacity' to the media) are classed as "destructive devices" by the BATF with regards to non-authorized posession. That's 5 years federal time and a $5,000 fine, unless they've changed it.

"Destructive devices", I believe, includes grenades and such things as 203mm howitzer shells. Surely we can see how a lump of inert plastic and/or sheet metal is in the same category of lethality... :(
