Gunmen open fire on contractors; no workers reported killed

NEW ORLEANS - Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on a group of contractors traveling across a bridge on their way to make repairs, authorities said.

Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people carrying guns, killing five or six.

Fourteen contractors were traveling across the Danziger Bridge under police escort when they came under fire, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers.

They were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help plug the breech in the 17th Street Canal, Hall said.

None of the contractors was killed, Hall said.

The bridge spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

No other details were immediately available.

There's been debate before on "Shooting looters on sight", but his was a response to being fired upon. Seems that roving gangs of armed thugs are getting increasingly bold (and violent). Will the Military start sweeps to "shoot the thugs"?

What gets me is the AP and other "news agencies" reported at first that the police opened fire on the contractors and killed several  You got to know even when they "correct" the story the damage has been done!!!

good movie line from 'Dirty Harry'....

...there's nothing wrong with shooting...so long as the right people get shot......

Why would any BG shoot at contractors with police escorts? Either they really thought they could rob these contractors or were just displaying their ability to shoot at whoever they want for no good reason. I guess the looters see any method of bringing NO back to normal as an end to their crime spree. I'm glad the right people were "terminated" in this situation.

I saw on the news some of these scumbags pushing an organ up the street. What are they planning to do with this huge piano? Where are they going to store it, and who are they going to try to sell it to? They're just taking anything they can get their hands on. These thieves should be shot on sight (unless they are stealing food or clothing to survive, obviously).

IIRC, In PA, during the Johnstown flood many years ago, they said on the news that looters would be shot on sight and labeled as flood victims.

Oh well. The old saying goes, all's fair in love and war, and that wasn't love, baby, that was war! I consider human life sacred, but these animals weren't human. World's far better off without 'em.

just displaying their ability to shoot at whoever they want for no good reason
That's my guess. They ere just pissing on trees to mark they're territory.

Either that or it' the NO version of
"Hold my beer, and watch this"

I chewed on this story some this morning while I thought about a guy I met at the local gun store yesterday. He is a retired LEO, who signed up to go there to escort/protect electrical workers trying to restore power there. He was desperately looking for a level 3 retention holster for his Glock, as he no longer had one, leaving at 600 AM Sunday for the Big Easy for an indefinite tour. If I had a Glock holster I would have given it to him along with a bunch of ammo. As an American and Christian it is my duty to help people in need. Unfortunately we live in such a small town and amongst all of us could not come up with any place even between here and the airport that would have one AND still be open Saturday afternoon. Well, IMNSHO those boys that fired upon the guys trying to help everyone there received the justice they deserved. Perhaps this will be a little wake-up to the armed gangs there that this is still America and God's country and we will not put up with this shtuff! Yes, we pray for the victims and pray without ceasing that many will be saved but this is America and this lawlessness will be stopped. In the wake of this catastrophy please do not forget the fourth anniversary of 9/11 this coming Sunday. Thank you and may God continue to bless America.

Besides being despicable behavior, it doesn't seem real smart - oh well, at least they got some of 'em. If you want to shoot at people for recreation, can't be surprised if they shoot back.

5 down with no human casualties... great !

I wholeheartedly support a shoot to kill order for any looter of non-essential items. ... not to mention a "blast "em to smithereens" order for taking shots at rescue workers.

Worthwhile thread....in other circumstances.
In these, however, it's no better than the sensationalist news networks who would have people believe that the criminal element is a significant percentage of those devastated by this storm.

Apologies to TBO.....I suspect he'd understand. Thread closed in the interests of balance.

ps: Posting was premature. There were two killed.
