Police issuing

Does anyone know of a website that shows which handgun are issued to which police agencies? This started out in my buying a Beretta Cougar and seeing after the fact that it had been issued in my hometown of Rochester, NY, a fact I never knew. I'm most interested in who else might have issued my new Cougar, but also in what any other agencies might be using since I'm actively seeking employment in three different agencies. Thank you for your time and input.

What would be the benefit of that knowledge? I would just go to a gun shop and figure out which "duty" handgun you like---at least 9mm, probably polymer and take a class. Don't get overly concerned about the gun aspect, you will have Puh-ha-lenty of trigger time in the academy.

There isn't one that I know of. Most departments are currently issuing Glock (G22, G23) and Sig .40 cals (P226, P229) from what I've seen.

It's just knowledge. General interest. My greatgrandad was a pistol instructor for the Navy, I've had "range-time" since I was twelve, and I've been an ATM technician and have had to range qualify for that as well, and know exactly where my preferences lay. It's just a general interest question because I see LAPD uses X, Kentucky State Police use Y, etc. Just wondering where this miscellaneous information comes from.

UHHH. How about calling the police agency you're interested in and talking directly to their range officer? The range officer can answer all your questions IF he thinks that you're legitimately interested in eventually becoming a local officer. If the thinks that you're seeking gun information for some nefarious plan of some sort, he might not answer any questions. So, you might want to actually drive down to the police department and directly talk to the range officer in person. Let him size you up first...

I must have framed this question, confusingly. I'm not interested in any particular department, I knwo what the ones I am appplying to use and know exactly what sorts I prefer. I'm just curious as to where the information comes from when Ayoob says Kentucky State Police used a S&W 10mm, or the website I found says Rochester P.D. uses a PX4. It's just a mild interest and if it's not easily accesable, or based on personal experience, hoorah. Just one of those purposeless musings that get posted to online forums. Thanks for the info that was provided so far though.

I'd be rather curious about such a thing myself but am not aware of where one might find a consolidated listing.

Just a wild guess, but I'd suppose that the compiling of such of thing might make for a good 13th labor of Hercules - one not easily solved by re-routing a navigable river. Simply compiling a list of agencies that issue a specific handgun might be non-trivial. If an agency's SWAT division issues something different than the rest of the force I can see it getting gummy in a hurry.

All the cops I know like cougars... Wait, we're talking about handguns...

I once spoke with a Lancaster PD officer that said his department had gone from the officer's choice (provided they qualified) to G21s across the board. The reason for this was uniformity of weapons and ammo/mags. I don't know how much truth there is in that. I can also see a problem with issuing a fat G21 to a officer of small stature and therefore small hands.

read more carefully grasshopper

from the link I posted:

ACCOKEEK, MD– The Rochester Police Department in New York State has announced the purchase of 775 Beretta Px4 Storm .45 handguns. The department chose the Storm because it was originally designed as a military handgun and was tested in-house at Beretta to pass the 2005 Joint Combat Pistol Program (which was later cancelled). The intent of the JCP program was to procure the most reliable, controllable, ergonomic, accurate, maintainable, and safe handgun for the U.S. Military Forces. The Rochester PD will be transitioning from Beretta’s Cougar handguns.

Press release.
Why in the world do you think the info wouldn't be "easily accessible"?

Good link, although I'll take it with a grain of salt ;)

I am NOT sure if maybe at one time they allowed it, but I saw a Montana HP officer a few years ago with a Ruger Security Six. I know it would have been "grandfathered in", but then it woulda had to have been issued at one point. NOT SURE, some places allow officers a certain type as long as they qualify.

Also MHP issues AR-15's now (Actually some type of M4 style carbine).

Havre, Montana PD issues the Glock 23 (That's the mid-size .40 I think...I am not a Glock person).

Just on a note :)

Really though, I always been intrigued by what is issued. At one point I had though of taking a road trip around the state, stopping at each sheriff's office and asking the receptionist "What does your department issue?" just to see the reactions :D

a telephone and google could save you thousands of dollars in gas...
It's not like it's secret information. Anyone with a pair of eyes can see what they're carrying in their belts, but in case someone isnt sure, anyone with a phone can call and ask.

In Chicago you are grandfathered if you came on with the wheelgun. I can carry one as an auxillary weapon but not as my "duty" weapon.
