Hey everyone. I have a savage model 110 pump 30-30, very nice and shoots extremely accurate. Im wondering if regular pointed bullets, not Hornady's, but regular Winchester power points are bad for the magazine? i know they can be dangerous in leverguns but im not sure if its a good idea for my pump gun?

I'm not familiar with your rifle, but if it has a tubular magazine like a shotgun pointed bullets are a no-no. If it's got a box type magazine they will be fine.

If you were to search in old books, you will find examples of pointed bullets causing cartridge ignition in tubular magazines.

Right, some Hornadys, specifically LeverRevolutions, are designed to work in tubular mags safely. Typical pointed rounds, especially FMJ are not safe.

Let me fix that. There are lots of Hornady bullets that are NOT safe in tubular magazines.

As a general rule, pointed bullets in a tubular magazine are a huge NO!!!!!
There are some exceptions. The new Hornady Leverevolution rounds, with soft plastic pointed tips are one.

The old Remington model 14,141 pump rifles had a spiral grooved tube magazine, so the tip of the bullet was not resting against the primer of the round ahead of it. Pointed bullets could safely be used in those rifles.

I don't think your Savage pump has that feature. Why not ask Savage?

I'd bet the answer will be don't use pointed bullets in the tube magazine.

Also, other then the new Hornady stuff, nobody loads pointed bullets as factory ammo for the .30-30. Thats because the majority of .30-30s have tubular magazines! If you are going to handload pointed bullets, you need to know that most of the common .30 cal pointed bullets (spitzers) are designed for more powerful rounds than the .30-30 and will probably not give good expansion at .30-30 speeds.

You can use pointed bullets in a .30-30 with a tube magazine, but only if you single load them into the chamber.

Well, you could do it as a 2 shooter. Load one in the magazine, chamber it. Load another in the magazine.

As long as there is only one in the magazine, it is OK.

Not that it is a good idea, all it takes is forgetting once to have a very bad day.
