plugged Mossy 500a

In an earlier post I noted that supposedly 8 shot Mossy 500 only holds 6. Advice was to tip the muzzle up and down and listen for a plug. Yup, I hear it. How do I remove it? The front of the mag is not made to come out. Is the mag tube easily removed from the receiver? I paid for 8 shots and by gum I want them.

Anybody have experience with 3" #000 loads?
 
Take the barrel off and shake the gun upside down. The dowel should come out of the hole in front of the mag tube where the barrel screw attaches. The dowel will have 2 o-rings on it, so you will have to pull it out of the mag tube.
 
I thought my pistol grip 500 only held 4 2 3/4" shells till i read this post, man do I feel like an ass! After removing tha rod, it holds 7 in tha tube now, its like a new gun!
 
I haven't been hunting for years now so I'm out-of-touch with the law, but IIRC, the plug is needed in a hunting shotgun (unless you're using a side-by-side or over-under) because the magazine can't be capable of holding more than 3 (?) rounds while hunting game birds such as dove, quail, pheasant, etc.

So if you go hunting, and that rule still applies, put the plug back in or you're illegal and Mr. Game Warden would like to meet you.

For self-defense purposes, however, the more capacity the better.

I didn't buy an 8-shot cyl bore for hunting. I have another shotgun for a fowling piece. Besides, plugged to 6 isn't legal for hunting either.
 
Thank you Clusive. I took your advice and now I have a gun that holds 8. I thought it might be like fishing a nickel out of the slot on a piggy bank with a table knife, but it came right out. For the life of me I can't understand why a gun advertised as holding 8 shots is plugged.
 
500 Persuader

The Mossberg Pursuader is an 8 shot pump. 7 + 1 with 3 inch shells.
When using 2 3/4 shells don't stuff 8 in the tube. The shotgun will not function properly, as well as potentialy damaging the spring.
 
As far as the 3 shot rule for hunting it really depends on the state and what you are hunting. Where I live the 3 shot rule is only in effect when hunting waterfowl in the water (i.e. boat, blind, etc...) but not when hunting in a field. Of course, some states have max capacities over 3 (lets say 5+1) for upland hunting and the 3 for waterfowl, while others have no limits. Just because your gun can or can not hold X number or rounds makes it legal or illegal for certain hunting situations. Always reference your state and federal regs and ask the officials (document name and number as well) if in doubt.
 
Slugthrower: Interesting info. I couldn't get 7*3" into the mag. Ended up with 1 in the chamber, 4*3" + 3* 2 3/4 in the mag, and that's all it will hold with no room at all to spare. I didn't see anything in the manual, but if I'm doing something that would do ill to the gun I want to know. Holding the action slide lock it runs thru the whole mag- haven't shot it yet. Am I better off to put 1 less 2 3/4 in the tube? Thanks for the info.
 
I assume that the Persuader is to be used as a combat shotgun. The 2 3/4 shell is better than the 3 inch mag. Not much gained in a 3 inch. Just more recoil. 2 3/4 will get it done. 7 + 1 is alright for the Mossberg.

My Persuader will fit 7 3" shells. Interesting that yours won't. It is possible that I have a slightly different model. The Mag tube on mine is similar to the 590. I have seen the Persuader with an end cap similar to the regular 500. Maybe that is the reason.

Here in N.C. the law applies when hunting migratory game birds.You have to take a required hunting safety cousre here in N.C., and I asked the wildlife officer who was teaching the required hunting safety course about this.One thing he pointed out is that sometimes is'nt made clear, is that 3 rounds means the whole gun, two in the mag one in the chamber, not three in the mag.

I went to 3" mag for the 1st round with 7*2 3/4 #00 in the mag. They are S&B with 12 in each one. Should be adequate. If it ain't whatever I'm up against is right out of the Sci Fi channel.

Certainly true enough, but sometimes people may use it for game-getting in a non-survival (non-emergency) situation...just a heads-up to those people.
