Plinking ammo in SHTF scenario

I just realized that say the SHTF tommorrow whether it be civil war, Y2K type stuff, or whatever else our minds could think up. Would the ammo that I have around for plinking (1000rds 55gr PMC) be good enough to have in a fight, for protection, or anything else that comes my way. For the most part I hear a lot about carry ammo and hunting rounds and special combat loads. But since I mostly have some cheaper stuff for range time and plinking, would that get the job done when it needs to get done.

Me personally, with my .223 in my bushy I think that I would be pretty confident in the plinking ammo to do most jobs it might need to do in an emergency situation. What are you thoughts on this.

Isn't 55gr the same as M193? The terminal ballistics of both M193 (55gr) and M855 (62gr) are pretty well-understood.

"The wound ballistics of the U.S. military Olin M193/Winchester 55 grain FMJ (X223R1 or Q3131) and green tip U.S. military Olin M855/Winchester 62 grain FMJ (RA556M855) cartridges makes them an adequate choice for use against violent criminal offenders."

"The likelihood of fragmentation not only in human adversaries, but in building materials as well, enhances the potential for stopping the threat with minimal shots fired, and reduces the danger to the surrounding populace if a round over-penetrates or misses the intended target. In weapons with muzzle velocity below 2500 fps, such as the HK 53, or Colt Commando XM177, the M885, or M193 do not fragment or break up, thereby greatly reducing wound effect."

Since the accuracy requirements for SHTF are much less than for target shooting or varmint hunting, I'd say that whatever ammo you have around will be perfectly adequate...

I'd look at it this way ... if someone gave me a head start, and said 'Don't worry ... I'm just going to shoot at you with plinking ammo.', I wouldn't feel any better about the situation. ;)
