Plinking ammo in .44apl and .44mag

I have my eyes on a S&W629 ($400, 8 1/2" barrel, nice carved grips, might shop around). I have no use for it, I do not hunt anything other than paper. A friend lets me reload on his rig but I still prefer to stick to calibers I can buy off the shelf.

What are your (relatively) cheap .44 fodder favorites?

Oleg, Aside from commercial reloads, I'm not sure there is a cheap .44 SPL round. I load an old Charter Arms Bulldog (I got one of the good ones) with CCI Blazer 200 gr, GDHP, a real "flying ashtray" configuration. $15.75/box of 50. Not cheap, but the caliber is hard to find in any configuration around my small town. Not very encouraging, but there you have it.

Around here, UMC (remington off-brand) is the cheap stuff for that caliber. Also try Speer Lawman (not sure if they make that caliber), and American Eagle (Federal off-brand). Stay away from PMC, the cases seem to be weaker (they're normally once used anyway) and they're not as accurate.

.44mag 3D Cowboy loads or (I know you said off the shelf, but a .44 of any flavor is expensive off the shelf)

new unprimed .44mag brass, large pistol primer, book charge of 2400, and either a very hard cast SWC, a cast SWC gas check or Hornady #4425 .430 JTC-SIL bullet.

.44. mag or spl factory ammo and cheap are mutually exclusive. Handloading is the only way to go, except for a defensive round. The .44 is a realtively poor choice for defence, but there are some rounds produced that will work well. They offer little advantage vs the extra cost though.

RAE: You have captured my attention. Why do
you say that .44 is a relatively poor choice
for defence?

Is it the obvious reason that one needs a
wheelbarrow to carry around a .44, or is
there something else I am unaware of?

Thanks, DanM

Oleg, My brother shoots .44 revolers, and has the same problem finding affordable ammo. A fellow TFLer gave a glowing recommendation for Collins Cartridge at www.ccammmo.com . I have some on order, but haven't tried any yet. In NEW .44 special they have 200 gr. RN Cowboy Loads for 135.00/500 and 210 gr. JHP for 140.00/500. Cheapest I've seen anywhere.

Good luck,
David

Well you can reload... OR

Ultra Max amkes a nice "cowboy" Round Nose flat point 240 grain lead bullet loaded to 44 special +p velocity (just under 1000 fps).

This is the cheapest commercial loading I've seen and still runs around $12/box.

If you own a 44 mag.. it really pays to reload. Check out Wiedner's reloading supply.. some of the best prices on 44 mag stuff.

danm,
My reference to the .44 as a relatively poor choice is based more on the cost per round than anything else. Good factory ammo aimed at the defensive market is far too expensive to use for practice. Reloading a round similar to say a Cor-Bon .44 Special is an option, but more trounle than buying a box of .45ACP off the shelf for about half the price. Oleg stated he wanted a factory round and in that context, I think the .44 family is down the list from other rounds. Most of the factory rounds are loaded as hunting ammunition, and as such, isn't a real good choice for defence. With the right load, and the right gun, a heavy .44 Special to a mid range .44 Mag can be a very good defensive weapon if you have the time and money to put into practice with it. I didn't mean to infer the .44's had no place, and in fact, I sometimes keep a Smith Model 29 4" barrel, loaded with silver tips as a house gun. However, I do practice with it before I use it as such when it's the .44's turn as house gun. IMHO, handloads have no place in a defensive gun, and the pickings in .44 are pretty slim in factory ammo. The good stuff comes with a pretty high price tag. I handload a round that has a similar recoil and muzzle blast as the Silver tips. Most other people don't go to that bother though. I do have some old factory loads, 240 gr cast lead hollow points, at just under 1100fps, produced by Remington some years ago. These were/are great defensive rounds, but just never caught on, and were discontinued. There are a lot of choices for a defensive gun and ammo combo that are easier and cheaper to shoot, that are more effective.

Oleg, I just wonder if you have any money left over to pay rent at the end of the month, after all the gun purchases? ;)

I didn't get the .44 -- in fact, as you can see from my post in Gear for Sale, I am strapped for cash.

I wonder if I could get some handouts as I am now a "deserving working poor"? If not, should I rob a gas station or a convinience store?

:) :)
