Plicking Pistols

I was wanting a P22 for when I walk in the country but when i went to a local gun shop he said that the P22 needed to have high velocity ammo and they had 2 50 round boxes. HE told me that they were hard to get . So he showed me the new tarus slim and said he has 6000 rounds of those 9mm ammo and told me they were just about as cheap as the P22 ammo.It is a very nice gun for what I know about them just wanted a pocket gun that would't cost me a fortune like my others.
Tell me what you think.

Sounds to me like that guy is full of it.

The P22's can run just fine on bulk packs of normal ammo from several companies. Some maybe not as well as others, but it can eat plenty of inexpensive 22lr ammo. It will typically run better on higher velocity stuff, but it's not the only option. Red Federal bulk packs tend to do good in P22's, and they're plenty cheap.

And it sounds to me like this guy is trying to sell you on a gun based on what kind of ammo he can sell you. Get the P22 and order ammo online..... Or get a Ruger Mark 1,2, or 3..... Or a Buckmark.

My P22 has digested around 30-40k rounds, mostly Federal American Eagle in the red box. I have also run various CCI, including Stingers. It's like a whole different pistol when fed Stingers. BTW, after that many rounds, the barrel is about plum wore out. Not the tack driver it once was.

In my experience, the P22 works better with CCI Mini-Mags than anything else I have used. It still doesn't make it the most reliable gun. But it is plenty reliable for range duty and it is really fun to shoot. It will, though, run adequately on bulk pack ammo like Federal's 525 round packs.

And if this fellow tells you 9mm is as cheap as .22LR, he's smoking crack. Even the Mini-Mags are only 7-8 bucks per box of 100. The bulk Federals run a shade over 20 bucks for 525. As has been said, try CCIs Stingers as well. They're still cheaper than 9mm at about 7-8 dollars per 50, but they improve the reliability of the weapon (at least they have for me.) I don't use them much because the Mini-Mags work so well though.

Dusty, I can't make any suggestion on which gun you should get, but I am wondering what you meant by "plicking" in the title. Did you mean "plinking" or "picking"?

I think you need to visit a different gun shop, or at least talk to a different person behind the counter. My P22 has shot hundreds of rounds of Federal and CCI Blazer bulk pack ammo and I can shoot 550 rounds of that for less than 100 rounds through my 9mm's.

Ummmm, if he's got 9mm Ammo as Cheap as .22 ammo then BUY IT ALL UP... And sell it to your buddies when you take them to the range to spank them :)

Let's see in SoCal...............it's about $15-20 a box of 50 of 9mm(when you can find it) and about $20 for a brick (500 rounds) of .22 high velocity rim fire.
high velocity .22 ammo is about the cheapest you can find.
:D

and about $20 for a brick (500 rounds) of .22 high velocity rim fire.

What is this mythical "brick" you speak of?:p

BTW to the OP, you may want to be sure "walking in the country/plinking" is legal where you're at.

i think your local gun store is a bit ethically challenged.

do you see this box?

525pack.jpg

that is a Remington Golden Bullet 550 round bulk pack of of .22lr. It is very common, and there are many bulk packs like it, I can think of federal as well.

they both retail for $15-$16 at academy
if you look very closely on the box, it says it is "HIGH VELOCITY" ammo.

i learned this out a while ago, but the standard ammo you find tends to be .22lr HV

and a .22lr pistol is $300 (browning buckmark, which i highly reccomend) compared to a equal quality .9mm ($500)

MY P22 will shoot about anything Federal or Remington bulk packs. But had some Federal Lighting no way would the P22 shoot the stuff. Most times wouldn't push the slide back to eject the spent round:eek: But then haven't found any of my .22 that will shoot the stuff rifle or handgun:barf:

So he showed me the new tarus slim and said he has 6000 rounds of those 9mm ammo and told me they were just about as cheap as the P22 ammo.It

He lied. HV .22 ammo is $3-$4 per 50 rounds. 9mm ammo is $20-$30 per 50 rounds.

What we think is you boycott that store, tell your friends to boycott that store, to buy a 22 someplace else and if the salesman was not the owner of the store complain to the owner of the store.

P22's can be picky like any gun but the fact is most 22LR ammo today is high velocity compared to the old standard velocity rounds we used to get. Just find what it likes and feed it as often as you can. Enjoy it and keep shooting.

I have a P22 and I love it. The grip is a touch short, but finger extension grip floorplates are available

My P22 was used when I got it, so I have no idea how many rounds are through it. I've put over 2.5K through it myself. I have had three or four failures to feed, all due to ammo. I have had two failures to eject, caused by the ejector ripping the rim of the cartridge. I have done nothing to the pistol but keep it scrupulously clean, and use dry lubricant on it

The P22 is not a havey-duty firearm and it is not a target pistol. However, I can currently group two inches with the 3.4" barrel at 33 feet, and I know I can tighten that up a bit- but not too much.

In all, my P22 has been a pleasure to own. It has had remarkably few problems, and it has eaten any ammo I put through it. Federal Bulk, Remington Golden bullet hollowpoint, Mini-mag...it all just works

The P22 is expensive in my opinion, which is why I bought one used

I can buy 1000 rounds of .22LR for 22 bucks, and I think that's pricey. To buy 1000 rounds of 9mm parabellum, I would be paying around 300 dollars- 20 boxes of 50, at at least 15 a peice

I too was looking for a plinking pistol for the last few months and I've looked at a bunch of them

Today I bought a Browning Buck Mark Camper Stainless Steel URX MS Ultragrip RX Pro 5 1/2" from Academy Sports & Outdoors.

It was on sale for $299 and I'd just seen the same gun at Cabela's for $399. I also saw the same gun at Bass Pro for $349.

Over the last couple of weeks - after looking at a lot of brands of .22 auto's - I narrowed it down to the Ruger Mark III 22/45 or the Buck Mark Camper in stainless steel.

Both are nice guns but I owned a Ruger Mark II years ago and it was a bear to strip down and clean. With the Mark III they have fixed several things that needed changing, but not the strip down.

So I ended up buying the Buck Mark - I can't wait to shoot it.

I hope you get what you want.

I have about 1000 rounds fired in my P22 and 90 percent is the Remington Gold Bullet bulk pack. I did try some Federal Lightning I had kicking around and it would NOT shoot them but the Federal 550 pack was fine. I would take your business elsewhere:)

I have about 2k rds through my P22 and its been doing fine.

98% of that ammo has been Minimags, and the other 2% was when I tried shooting about 100rds each of Wildcats and Remington when I first got the gun. You better believe I sold those few boxes and kept Minimags only for my P22.
