Will someone please tell me where they keep getting the stat that '13 children a day' are killed in the US by guns ??? If it were true, Colombine would be a slow news day. They keep repeating it, where does it originate ???

I'm watching Clinton right now on the Today show...
RH, you beat me to it, I was going to post and ask the same question.
I want a citation where this figure can be found.

if you count children as humans under 21 and include "children" shot by police then you can fudge the numbers to this point.
http://www.mcdl.org/Stats/childrenkilledbyguns.htm

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has mortality tables broken down by age groups at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/releases/99facts/99sheets/97mortal.htm [ PDF~1mb] (and see tables 16-18). For 1997, there were 1.72 gun
deaths/day of persons aged 0-14. For persons aged 15-24, there were 22 deaths/day. If we say that a "child" is everyone under age
18, then we should assign about 1/3 of the age 15-24 deaths to persons aged 15-17. This results in about 9 deaths/day due to guns.

If we say that a "child" is anyone under 21, then we assign 6/10ths of the 15-24 groups to children, and get 13.38 deaths of "children"
aged 15-20, plus 1.72 deaths of real children, to get to the factoid of "15 children a day."

In other words, this factoid includes 20 year old "children."

Note: The NCHS courts all deaths by firearms; thus, the totals include persons who are justifiably shot by the police or by crime victims
while perpetrating major violent felonies.

More precise data is available from the U.S. Mortality Detail File (a web search will quickly lead to where to buy it), but this is raw data
available on tape for over $700.

Wouldn't surprise me if they used 13 because it's a baaaaad & unlucky number, assuring the sheeple that those demon guns should be removed from society.

Thanks dZ...
I forgot about the 21 yr old children ;)

It's noteworthy to stress that the figure not only contains individuals who, under the law, are not children, but that the numbers include justified shootings by Law Enforcement and citizens.

It also includes gangbangers weeding each other out.

If you repeat a lie often enough and long enough, it takes on a life of it's own.

Some guy in the 1930's said that, can't remember his name but he kinda reminds me of the people surrounding the President.

Consider: if you're over 18, you're not only old enough to be prosecuted as an adult (17 in my state), old enough to sign a contract, old enough to be held liable for your actions in every way, but you're also considered old enough to BUY and OWN a long gun. So, according to the above use of "kids" under 21, there's about 3 years during which a person could be killed by his own legally owned firearm, and still be considered to be a "child" who died by guns.

By such logic, our military would be committing war crimes whenever we shot an 18 opponent. After all, "He's just a child." But consider the hurt we'd be in if we quit accepting "children" in our military!

Ever been to Disney World? Isn't there a character there named Figment?

Has to be it since the actual numbers don't support that claim.

After smoking much dope, listening to his wife, having a daughter that looks like a horse's arse, being a trader, you could get lost in a little world of your own where you were a good president and you saved America from its sins and saved all the good citizens from the evil gun owners by giving false stats, thats where it comes from.. =)

Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

I posted this in General Discussion back in December in reference to the MMMarch.

I came across a flier from the folks at Stop Handgun Violence in Massachusetts. They are helping to put together a million mother march on mother's day against guns. Some of their propaganda is quite interesting.
4 out of 10 crime guns recovered by law enforcement are from youth and juveniles (age 24 and under) AFT report Crime trace Analysis, February 1999)

51% of the guns used in crimes by juveniles and people 14 to 24 were acquired by straw purchasers.

Funny how your still a kid at 24 to these people. If a 14 year old girl or boy gets raped by a kiddie toucher the liberal press will more often than not refer to the child as a young man or woman. These folks are probably lumping gang bangers into to their statistical stew.

Anyone else heard anything on this. Our police commissioner is on the board of this organization.

I did a little looking in the 1999 World Almanac last night. If cities want to cut save medical expenses by sueing someone, they should sue the auto industry. According to the Almanac, the 1996 medical cost of auto injuries was 176.1 Billion, this was worked out to be 680 gallons of gas for each licensed motor vehicle, or aprox $20k for each new vehicle purchased in 1996. Who knows, maybe the cars will be next to be outlawed.

Well, if they want to be ridiculous about it, how about using these numbers.

My wifes mother's age is usually a classified number, but for the sake of clarity, let's say it's 72, and her mother is 84. If a BG were to do the unthinkable to my mother-in-law, does that mean another child has been killed by a weapon?
Since her mother is still alive, she's still someones "child", in the sense that the parent is still alive.

Best Regards,
Don

I've gone into the numbers put out by NCHS and came up with the following, a nice size for clipping and sending to your representative or senator:
---------------------------------------

The Truth About Guns and Children

President Clinton implies that 13 children are innocently killed each day by guns. This is clearly misleading and wrong. The following statistics are compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) for 1997.

The Total for children killed per day by guns (all causes) by age:

14 and under:...1.73 gun deaths per day. (19.21 deaths per day (7,013/yr.) by all other injury causes)
15-18:............8.96 gun deaths per day. (17.36 per day (6,336/yr.) by all other causes)
19-20:............4.48 gun deaths per day. (8.68 per day (3,168/yr.) by all other causes)

Please note again that these figures are for all deaths caused by firearms, including suicides (32% of ages 15-20), persons who are justifiably shot by the police or who were victims of major violent felonies (including gang and drug-related violence) (63% of ages 15-20), and all accidental deaths.

While the death of innocent children is tragic for all, we must not loose sight of the real facts. More children under 15 drowned (1010) in 1997 than died innocently through the accidental discharge of firearms (142).

How many kids drown in the bathtub every day?

Don't forget that in ER reports for "firearm injuries" they include pellet and BB guns in that catagory. Think more kids have those than adults?
