Please tell me about the Walther P5

I just held one NIB today at the gun store and want to know everything I can about it. This is the full size model. What should the price be and should I get it?

Very funky pistol...one of the Big Three to come out of the West German police pistol trials in the early 1980s. The same trials brought us the HK P7 and the SIG P225. The P5 is basically a beefed-up modernized Walther P38 with a redesigned slide.

Peculiarities: It ejects brass to the left, and has a heel-mounted mag catch. Single operation lever, which decocks the gun and operates the slide lock.

I don't ever see them used anywhere, but I've seen them online for quite a bit over $500. I'd probably pay that much for one in good shape.

Excellent and classy firearm. In the same league as the HK P7 and Sig 225. If you can get one for under $700 NIB or LNIB, get it. I've got one and its so nice I can't bring myself to shoot it.

Very cool pistol!!! The DA trigger sucks, though!! That is because of the mechanical safeties!! The P5 is probably the safest gun you will ever carry!!:D Mine cost $900!! Worth every penny!!!!

Some of the gun magazines in the early
Eighties commented on its very high level of accuracy. I'd be careful about buying one sight unseen, though. Mine had very poor machining on the receiver above the trigger - you could almost file your nails on the rotary tool marks. I needed longer fingers than mine to operate it comfortably, so I got rid of it.

Those of you who have shot it, how acurate is it? See I was all set on a Steyr M40 until I saw the P5, and the price is under 600$ so I'm trying to debate putting it in layaway or not. Also would you sugest it over a P99?

I think the P99 is a much better gun than the P5. Better trigger and ergonomics. I've shot a couple of P5's, but I own a P99 Military.
