That was in 1992

Back in the 1970’s High Standard made an inexpensive 9 shot, double-action “plinker” called the Sentinel. Noticing that single action cowboy guns were all the rage they modified the Sentinel with a western-looking grip and hammer. Otherwise it was the same at the regular Sentinel. Various finishes, grip material, barrel lengths, and models with or without a simulated single action ejector system were offered with names like “High Sierra,” “Longhorn,” “Double Nine,” and of course "49er."

Suggested retail was around $160.00, in terms of 1970 dollars so you didn’t get a bad deal.

It's one of the Double nine/ Longhorns and a very well designed western style double action. I believe that, like the Sentinel, it was designed by a man named Sefried (sp?) who went on to work for Ruger until his retirement. the only problem I've seen with any of these was a loose barrel on one of the 9.5" Longhorns . the barrels are pressed and pinned into the alloy frame and can get loose if over-stressed by accident or misuse.

I hope its a nice shooter, the double action pull must be about 20 pounds! I wonder why it was called the "NATO 49er"?I think what must have happened is some High Standard collector passed on and his family took everything to the gun shop i frequent.I walked in to finally pick up a check for my SAR-2 (YAH!) and was greeted by a dozen High Standards all lined up on shelves.I did find a guy who will do a serial # check to see when it was made and shipped, but its $25.00.I don't know if i care that much. Thanx
