Just would like to have an extra barrel link around for a spare since it seems like a high wear item and I am a high volume shooter..can you please school me on the size that the Springer 1911 a1 uses as far as the barrel link and in the meantime waiting for responses I am going to do some research. Thanks guys. I already have the barrel block from brownells (I think that's where it came from). Thank you all.

I believe standard size is #3 barrel link at .278 but am not sure if Springfield uses this in the A1. Thanks again.

I measured center to center and I am getting .278 so I guess its standard. But I did not remove the link to get this measurment. Is this part on Springfield 1911's, the barrel link MIM? Just curious. By the way the C&S Duty "drop in trigger" was truly drop in and have fired 400 rounds so far with it. Just trying to delete MIM parts. I may be going over board with this whole MIM thing. If you guys think for a carry pistol which this is for me and the stock MIM parts will hold up to at least 10,000 rounds-my old RIA/Citidel sure held up that long..then I will stop replacing parts.

Okay just ordered some new parts, Wilson Com. hammer strut, BP firing pin stop and slide stop, progress is good so far as far as parts accumalation. Going to drop in and function test each part and fit as nesseccary. Since all these new parts are hitting the pistol frame, bought 3000 rounds just to test all new parts in conjunction with the new C&S trigger I installed.

Maybe you should start a blog. Might make talking to yourself a bit more normal...;)

That said honestly sometimes it's better to just add to existing threads. This is your fourth thread on the same gun and modifications to said gun. People will come back to threads they've contributed to already. If people see you constantly starting new threads sometimes they zone out.

I also don't generally go this route but some of your questions are at a pseudo gunsmith level. Some of the 1911 specific forums might get you more of what you need.

The link in my Springfield is now at about 50,000 rounds.

It's not a high wear item. Have a spare extractor, and learn how to tension and install it.

Just for the people who are wondering. The Wilson Com. BP extractor is a drop in fit in a Springfield 1911 A1 Stainless. But with the exception of tensioning, which is very straight forward easy and common sense. I dropped it in fitted it, didn't even use my pull gauge I am kind of getting a feel for proper tension. It is not rocket science at all-well at the extractor end of business- so I fitted it with some tension loaded some dummy rounds and they ejected very well then on the last couple rounds I removed the magazine and racked the slide; same ejection. It might take a little more tension but not going to go there until I am at a range so I can test it.

FROM SPRINGFIELD: The barrel link is not MIM nor is the stock extractor. Just going to fit the Wilson ext and reinstall the stock extractor. If it works don't screw with. But...I am getting pretty close to ZERO mim parts. Now for a couple thousand rounds of testing. I think it is a good idea to test each induvidual part that has been replaced in these 1911's before adding more parts, I would say for example, new trigger install, run 300 rounds through it, add more awesome parts, run more ammo, I doubt it is a good idea to just swap ALL your parts out and then run a bunch of ammo because if it doesn't run then you won't know where to begin to remedy any problems that come up.

Uh Wilson Combat parts are really nice. I did order a C&S drop in trigger the combat/duty one and it works great but I want to kind of do a Franken Build type thing-well not Franken build but it will be sweet. You see I want all Wilson Combat parts-everything with the exception of the slide frame and barrel but I will replace the barrel link just because and save all the old parts as backups. So speaking with Springfield today, they said they were no aloud to disclose anything about what is MIM and what is not so I asked if the stock fire control group is and they said no it is not, then they went on to say their are very few MIM parts and the ones that are, are very good for an MIM part. They have a test pistol of every type they offer and the A1 1911's are 60,000 rnds and their stainless model is over 100,000. So I guess what ever is MIM isn't all that bad. Still though I am going to eventually fit Wilson's BP trigger, sear, and disconnector, just ordered the stones, the sear stone and shim. I have read some books and watched some videos on how to do this. Shouldn't be too hard.

If I do I have to get a ca model and all their ca models for some reason are loaded with mum parts. They went to bar stock parts not too terribly long ago. I already have a solid frame and slide fit is really nice. Installed now I have the cylinder and slide duty trigger kit so I think I'm gonna leave that. But slide stop and barrel link will be Wilson. New extractor works great as well.

If the gun is properly fitted, I don't think you will ever have an issue with the barrel link.
If there's a problem with the relationship of the barrel and frame when the former is linked-down, you will "stretch" the link every time the gun is fired and that can lead to broken links, but if the link is in compression like it's supposed to be, there's not a lot of stress on it.
The link pin is usually staked in the barrel, so if you did break a link, it's not a part that can be readily replaced in the field.
