Does anyone, on this board have an authoritative resource (website), listing the authors, sponsors, and co-sponsors of all Federal firearm legislation in the U.S. from 1934 to present?

I am particularly interested in the names, and party affiliations of the authors, and sponsors of restrictive firearms legislation (gun control).

I have a theory that ALL this type of legislation stems solely from Congresscritters of the Liberal (probably Democrat) persuasion. This is because, I believe it is in their very nature to regulate, and curtail our freedom to own firearms, and a host of other freedoms. I would like to authoritatively either prove, or disprove this theory.

For example, there is a moron who frequently posts here, alleging that President Bush was “responsible” for passing the Assault Weapons ban of 1989. If fact, the only reference to a 1989 Assault Weapons ban that I can find, is the Roberti/Roos Ban passed in California. Both of these guys are Democrats. They are now gone, but the idiot law still stands.

I am not especially interested in which President signed these laws, because sometimes foolish laws are attached to a piece of essential legislation, such as military appropriations bills.

Thank you, in advance for any authoritative information you may provide.

This is like the antis, trying to find one reason why the world is screwed up, which in their eyes is guns.

The situation is much more complex than that. I agree that having a global reference to all federal handgun legislation passed would be important, but I'm sure that you will have more than liberals joining in the process of making it legislation, including times where conservatives join surreptitiously in support, and in actually voting for the measure.

The Brady Bill was named, of course, after Ronald Reagan's press secretary who was shot when Reagan was shot. How much did Reagan have to do with that ligislation, either through quiet support or other methods.

Reasonable people can see the gun issue differently, and people who support some gun legislation doesn't make them liberal, or communist, or traitors.

Except to a very small, and very rigid, group of marginalized citizens. Not all antis want to ban all handguns and not all pro-RKBAers want to make gun owning next to godliness.

Even Larry Platt and GOA, tough and fearless and uncompromising as they are, would never take that kind of stand.

It is my opinion that many people who are the most vocal about never giving up their rights also never exercise their rights to work hard to get in the good guys and work hard to throw the other bastards out. They just sit back and bitch!

And they usually bitch about liberals! Liberals are not the issue. Public opinion, where 73% of the American populace thinks we need more gun legislation, is the issue. As long as we collectively sit back on our haunches and let "the other guy" do our bidding, i.e., the NRA, GOA, JPFO, etc., we deserve any gun restrictions we get!

Joseph, I'm surprised. Is there any inkling, anywhere, that would lead you to suspect that Reagan was involved in any way with the push for the Brady Bill? I'm not 110% fan of Reagan's, like many conservatives, but I can't see where you make that link.

Sorry, Dick...

start with http://thomas.loc.gov/ and see what you can find there. The Congressional Record may be on file on the Library of Congress site at http://www.loc.gov/
