Hello Everyone,

I’m very new to the 1911 scene and have a few very basic questions about a new pistol, a SA Milspec. Any help from you 1911 pros would be much appreciated!

1. When re-assembling, does the end of the recoil spring guide simply butt against the barrel link in its forward position? A diagram in my manual shows it that way, I think, but I want to be sure as this seems just a bit precarious to me. Is the recoil spring guide not supposed to rest against the barrel lugs?

2. The slide to frame fit is very tight, so much so that when cycling the slide by hand it seems to bind a little bit. From my view, it seems like the slide may be contacting the slide-stop pin (even when there is not an empty mag in the chamber), but I am not sure this is the cause. The overall fit is very tight, which is good I assume, but not if it binds the action. Does it just need broken in, or is there something unnatural here? Bear in mind the piece is brand-spankin’ new and unfired as of yet.

3. Is there some assembly/disassembly guide available on the web somewhere?

Thanks in advance!

just a quick update....

Got to the range this afternoon and put 50 rounds through it. It shot well, had two failures to feed where the round got stuck 1/2way in the chamber. Other than that it was accurate. I'd still appreciate any feedback on the above questions. Thanks.

Claywms,

Yes, while reassembling the barrel link is forward and the spring guid is against it. When you put the slide on the frame, try this: hold the slide and frame upside down, start the slide on the frame, then as you briskly move the slide to the full rear, rotate the pistol upright. When done briskly, you will find the link down and lined up properly for the slide stop.

Keep it lightly lubed and keep shooting it. After 200 rounds or so if you still think it is binding, have a qualified 'smith look at it. It's hard to diagnose what you're feeling from a distance.

For an on-line disassembly guide check out some of the following websites:

Good luck.

SA has a lifetime factory warranty. Check with Dave Williams in the custom shop before you have a local smith do anything. Sounds like it's just new...How many rds of ammo have passed through this gun? What model is it? Picture? How much experience do you have with handguns? 1911s'?

...good luck and keep us posted. The last SA I bought new took upwards of 1000rds to break in and quite a bit of "polishing" as well...Others' will relate perfect out of the box function, so...it's really a very individual thing. These guns have -0- QC so some are much better than others. SA will warranty almost anything though...and if this is new, they will make it right for you.

1) The spring guide butts against a "shelf" in the frame (horseshoe shaped, just forward of the slide stop pin hole) when the gun is assembled. The guide contacts the barrel/link only until the barrel/slide assembly is mounted on the frame.

2) The slide is never in contact with the slide stop pin (the part that passes through the barrel link). Do you mean the rear extension of the slide stop? When there is no magazine in the well, there should be a (tiny) gap between the top-rear of the slide stop and the slide. If you remove the slide stop, does the binding go away?

On a brand-new gun, you should probably put a few hundred rounds through it before assessing potential problem areas.
