Please help me vote for my County Sheriff

I recently watched the local debates for County Sheriff and here is my take on the situation. I have three choices.

Candidate #1, the incumbent. Claims to be pro-RKBA but uses the Al Gore "I won't interfere with hunters and sportsmen" approach. We are a "shall issue" CCW state and he's famous for dragging the process out as long as he can. He wants background checks on private gun sales and believes gun registration will "aid the police in solving crimes." He also seems to be pro- big government and my LEO friends claim he wants to shut down small town police departments in order to put the whole county under Sheriff's department protection. He's a Republican.

Candidate #2. Pro CCW, against background checks and registration, and I've heard (rumor) that he shoots class III fun stuff. During the local debate, he basically said everything about the RKBA that we here at this forum like to hear. He's a Democrat.

Candidate #3. Wants all firearms laws abolished. Wants to turn the cameras in police cars around to only monitor the actions of the officers. Says if elected, he will use his power as the top LEO to arrest all Federal IRS agents in the community (seriously). He's a loony.

So what do I do? I've publicly announced that I wouldn't vote for the Good Lord himself if he ran as a Democrat, but my Republican choice doesn't look so hot this time. Any thoughts?

Let's see, Candidate #3 wants to return firearm ownership to what our Founding Fathers intended, wants to monitor those who "protect and serve", in order to insure that they really do "protect and serve", and wants to arrest Constitutionally Illegal Agents of a Constitutionally Illegal Agency, and yet you call him a "looney". I'm confused

I'd vote for candidate #2. No question.

Candidate #3 may have ideas that sound good in theory, but there's no way he could ever implement them. The Feds would find a way around him, highest law officer in the county or not. :(

I rather doubt that your local County Sheriff will be able to abolish all firearm laws. He does sound like a loon. My vote is for #2, even though he is a Dem. he sounds like the best candidate you have available at least for RKBA.

You could always write-in yourself, it would be the equivalent of voting for Harry Browne for president. You stand a better chance of winning than he does.

That's why we have secret ballots. Only the Good Lord himself will know that you voted Democrat. #2 all the way. Hell, I'm a registered Democrat but that doesn't mean I'm on the bad side of this issue.

You are lucky you have a choice for sheriff. My local sheriff, who is very anti-rights refuses to issue ("may issue" state) ccw's to common folk like me. He is running unopposed. Looks like I'll get at least one vote--my own write in.

No. 2 is the way to go, IMHO.

First stop the momentum of the antis. Then, years down the line, maybe go the idealistic path of No. 3.

Small steps, small steps.

The good news is, in this case voting Dem doesn't hurt anything. Not for that position. Go with #2, and encourage your friends to do likewise.

Lemme 'splain some things about voting "reflexivlely GOP". Let's take California as an example. The GOP leadership HERE is strongly pro-RKBA, led by State Senator Haynes and others. So if the GOP gains control of the state Assembly OR the state Senate, they get to rig the committees. They can take a key committee such as a Public Safety committee and stack it with pro-RKBAers, creating a "killing zone" for new gun control bills.

It works great even if there's traitors among the GOP rank'n'file legicritters (as there usually is). Which means in a race between a grabber GOP (like Cuneen in the San Jose area) and a grabber Dem, you still vote for Cuneen to give the GOP *leadership* control over committee seats. If they stick Cuneen in a committee, it'll be one totally unrelated to RKBA.

The Federal-level GOP leadership is also cool right now, the same stuff applies: vote Tom Campbell over DiFi despite his non-support of RKBA.

Understand, there are almost certainly some states where the state GOP leadership are themselves traitors, in which case this logic doesn't apply. I've heard New York State is one such - do your own research though, don't take my word for it 'cuz I ain't certain.

But in a Sheriff's race? It doesn't matter - his being a Dem doesn't help any other Dems, and doesn't help the overall Dem agenda which at least on the Fed level is almost totally grabber. Judge him on his own merits, which seem excellent.

NOTE: There are some states (especially in the South) where the state Dem leadership is PRO RKBA.

Note2: even in a state like California, support true pro-RKBA Dems!!! We've got a really good one in Assemblyman Rod Wright. During the various all-out struggles in the legislature, Wright had the ear of Gray Davis and was able to work "behind the scenes" to flounder several really nasty grabber bills *because* Wright's a Dem. The real killer he helped fight against was the bill ending pre-emption in gun laws, which would have left San Francisco, LA and others able to ban all handguns.

So it's bad news saying "I'll never vote Dem again!".

JJR, I take it you're talking about Vaughn Killeen, Ada County Sheriff??

I know whereof you speak. What a choice.

Take care. J.B.

Yes Jay, that's our boy :(. At least he hasn't been taken too seriously all these years.

I guess for the first time in my life, I'm going to have to vote for a De,De,De,De... I can't even say it.

Killeen will probably win anyway. Not for any good reason, just that people tend to vote straight party line here (you only gotta push one button at the voting booth).

For those who thought #3 was the better choice, I must add that I only tried to include RKBA issues in my little description. As they weren't really gun related, I omited many other things that I heard this man (boy) say that scared the hell out of me. I firmly believe that if (when)this kid loses the election, he will soon be up in the clock tower with a rifle and a picture of his mother.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Sounds like we better vote for #3 then. Lots of libertarians running for local office here in Idaho.

JJR - thanks for the information -- I'm afraid I missed that debate. Do you by any chance know if there's a transcript anywhere?

And for those not in the area -- I met #3 down at harvest festival in Kuna. The boy (yes BOY) is indeed a loon. Try this:

Me: Do you have any law enforcement experience?

Him: Of course not, I hate cops.

ME: won't that make it a little hard to work with the department?

Him: Who cares, I hate cops.

In short -- Libertarian is all well and good -- I feel the same way. But just 'cause someone shares the same beliefs don't mean he's a good choice for the office. Bother.

Kaylee,

The best I could find was a link to some watered down highlights of the debate. You can't really get much of a feel for any of the candidates in this and none of them sound too terribly bad. You just can't appreciate the black trenchcoat and Hitler Youth haircut in a written transcript ;).

The problem I really have with ol' #3 is that I want to vote Libertarian, and there are several Libertarian candidates that will get my vote this time. Guys like this just fuel the stereotype of Libertarians as "less than connected" government-hating extremists. It's that image that makes people less interested in learning more and dooms the party to never making a significant impact. :(
