Pleasant Surprise at the LGS

I was looking around my LGS today, and I decided to poke at the little pocket pistols. They had the LCP and the TCP sitting side by side, so I decided to take a look and compare them. I was surprised to find that the TCP was better in just about every category I can think of. It fit my hand better, which is, of course, completely subjective, but what really surprised me was the overall feel and fit/finish of the little guy.

Some of the basics are well known, like last shot hold open on the TCP, but not the LCP, but the real "wow" for me was how well constructed the TCP felt. While the LCP was a bit loose and had distinct play in the slide (side to side while in battery), the TCP was tight and felt like it was better put together. The salesman even offered to get one from the back, since the display model LCP has been handled a lot, and it also felt, well, sloppy. The trigger on the TCP was also better - smooth and far lighter than i expected. The best part was the price. Both were on sale - the LCP was marked at $239, which is a decent price, but the TCP was $179!

Assuming the wife will go for it, that little baby is coming home with me later this week. Now I just have to figure out how to convince her that I need one...

BigMike - That is a great price. An easy way to convince her.... is buy it and slip it in her stocking as a Christmas Stocking Stuffer. Pull the $$$ out of an ATM so she won't know what it was used for and spoil your surprise.

Best of luck man!

I had a TCP for a while. I put about 300 rounds through it, of those about 75 failed to feed or failed to eject and jammed the gun so badly that I felt unsafe even trying to dislodge the cartridge from the inside of the pistol. I was not limp wristing or any other excuse, I sent the gun to the factory and 6 weeks later it was finally back, another 100 rounds with the exact same results. On top of that he finish on the slide rusted just about every 2 or three times I carried it. I sold it and told the buyer all the issues and they took it anyways. I suggest the lcp from ruger, it has a great reputation and would be a great gun that is well worth the extra, also they are on sale all over the Internet for $200 right now

Well, I went back for it today, and they were sold out.:( But kudos to them for awesome service, because they immediately offered to order one for me at the $179 sale price. I am quite pleased now, and should have my new gun in hand in 2-3 weeks, according to the shop's estimate.

Didn't see anything about that. There is a mail in deal for a free NRA membership. I am already a member, but maybe my son will want to use it.

Every LCP I have handled has been reliable, TCP not so much. It's your life, and your talking about a pocket defense pistol, choose wisely.

One word of advice for any new Taurus: Shoot the crap out of it as much as you can as soon as you can. While Taurus has a lifetime warranty they only cover shipping charges for a limited time. It used to be a year, I think now it is only 90 days.

I picked up a TCP 3 or 4 years ago. It's gone bang every time I pulled the trigger. I don't remember having any failures to feed or eject. It's reliable for me. The only thing I've done to it is polished the feed ramp with some Flitz and a q-tip. I don't remember how many rounds I've put thru it but it's over 500. Its accuracy amazes me, especially considering the mere suggestion of sights it has.

I had a TCP that I really tried to like, but just could not get past the reliability issues. Traded it in on a LCP that runs like the proverbial sewing machine.

I have owned both a Taurus TCP and Ruger LCP. The Ruger's finish looks better but otherwise I did not see it as any better than the Taurus. Both worked flawlessly for me out of the box. I sold them both, but that was more due to not liking pocket guns than anything bad about either gun.
