Play in the trigger pull

I recently attended a gun show - handled a revolver and it had a little slop or play in the beginning of the trigger pull before it met resistance. Not much... Maybe 1/16th to 3/32nds... Anybody tell me what causes this? Is it common? Thanks in advance!

Which revolver? Make, and model. We may assume it is a S&W or Colt, but unless you tell us for sure, it may be a Madra-Mia Picketo or something. If it was a S&W, there should have been mo play. The trigger-return spring should keep the trigger under tension.

Unless the gun is a well made custom, it's more than likely to have some imperfections, just due to the results of mass production.
That small of take up isn't uncommon, especially with a double action revolver.
Most people don't have a sensitive enough trigger finger to have a problem with that amount.
Don't sweat it.

A little movement before the trigger meets the double action sear (hammer strut) is perfectly normal in most DA or DA/SA revolvers. In firing, it is taken up as part of the normal trigger pull and ignored. But if the trigger is flopping loose, without spring tension at that point, then the gun has a serious problem.
