I have read that all plastics are boidegradable and that over a period of time solvents and oils will take there toll on even the best plastics..are guns with plastic compontents a good long term investment

All gun materials degrade (steel rusts) if not given proper care. Modern plastics should not be affected by normal gun cleaning materials, but people do try cleaners and solvents not made for guns, so no one can really say what they would affect.

I don't think modern gun makers really care much about investment, if any gun makers ever did. (The "made as a collectible" fad is recent, and usually the guns are poor investments.)

Did Sam Colt, in his little factory at Paterson, want to manufacture investments? I think he wanted to move product and make money and didn't give a hoot what happened to the guns after the money came in. Of course, not enough did, and that is another story.

I expect that biodegradability will be an issue for me long before it becomes an issue for my plastic-framed guns. :)

A couple of years ago, an idiot friend of mine cleaned his USP with some sort of wheel cleaner. Though it didn't do anything visually noticeable to the gun, it did give all the plastic parts a "gummy" feeling that wouldn't go away. Your hands wanted to stick to the grip and his trigger pull was increased by many, many pounds. He had to have all of the lockwork replaced and the grips still feel funky. Don't use wheel cleaner.

However, if we're talking about natural biodegradability and long term investments, I would guess that plastic probably has a much longer shelf life than steel. And, as Matt pointed out, both have a longer shelf life than you :).

Gun Scrubber did that to one of my SAKs.
Some plastics don't like that stuff.

However, GS hasn't bothered my Glocks.
I really like Powder Blast better.
