Planned or Spontaneous?

Are your gun purchases planned or are they spur of the moment buys?

Do you spend days or weeks planning and researching the next gun you buy or do you walk into a shop, spot a gun that you were probably not even contemplating on buying and grab it?

A few guns I have purchased were planned. Last year I drew a deer tag for a shotgun only area. After some research I purchased an H&R Slug gun. However, most of the guns I buy are unplanned.

So, which strategy do you use?

Some of both. On new firearms it is generally researched first. With used firearms l will sometimes come across ones I had not planned on purchasing but am generally familiar with. Sometime I'll buy these quickly and sometimes I'll do a bit of research first. I ran across a nice Norinco 1911 recently and knew they had a good rep. I still researched it, went back and re-examined it and put it in lay away today.

Actually, some of mine are spontaneously planned. There are two pistols I am still looking for, and if I find either in a store I will buy them. It will look like a spontaneous buy, but it has been planned for a couple of years.

But several of mine have been very spontaneous. At least twice I have bought guns that my favorite gun shop had just bought from a customer. In the last case, the seller had not gotten out the door before I told the shop owner that I would take it if he did not set the price too high. It took him longer to log it in his book than it took to do the paperwork for me to buy it.

Overall, I really do not think I have ever planned and researched a buy; I usually know what I want, or have a good idea of what I want. Sitting here for a few minutes thinking about it, I cannot ever remember planning and researching a buy.

Obsession

I'll usually get an idea of a gun I "need" by looking at this forum or watching YouTube reviews. Then I'll look everywhere for prices. Then as if it was fate I'll usually get a sale ad from my favorite LGS where they'll have my gun on sale. Then I'll rush down to buy it. For instance my SIG 227 I bought last week because it was on sale for $799. I'm done for the year!! Just throw the ad away next time. Lol

I've done/do both.

New guns are usually planned purchases.

Used are more of "I've wanted one of those for a while, and I do happen to have some extra cash right now, and it is a pretty good deal" type thing.

Also ended up with a few firearms that weren't planned, but my youngest brother (absolutely horrible with money) offered to me for probably half what they would go for used. So I saved them from a pawn shop, and he got some money to blow on xbox games, Mtn. Dew, and Mcdonalds.

I always think about what my next gun purchase might be. I wouldn't spend more than a few hundred without first running it by Mrs. Zach_. Mrs. Zach_ wouldn't spend more than a few hundred without running it by me. Ever price purses and women's shoes? Spontaneous purchases can really cause marital problems. Ask my ex-wife.

Only ONE of my gun acquisitions was planned thoroughly, and that is my CMP M1 Garand. I researched and planned for about a month before finally deciding to buy one.

One of them was a gift, had no idea about it either, it was a surprise.

The rest were all spur the moment. I literally walked in my LGS, saw a gun I liked, and bought it.

Both, absolutely.

I wanted a Beretta 92FS for more than a decade before I actually got one. It has been everything I thought it would be and more.

I saw my Sig SP2022 stainless with night sights new in box for $399 and decided that was simply too good a deal to walk away from. So far, very happy with it, too.

I think both types of purchase are a great part of our wonderful hobby! :D

Both. I usually do a good bit of research before buying a gun, but I've been known to walk into a gun shop just to look around and ended by walking out with a gun. That usually happens when I find a good deal on a used gun--my new gun purchases are usually better planned.

I never plan a gun purchase. I don't buy new guns. I don't even buy "new-used" guns. The guns I want, they don't make any more. I learned if I see one I want, I'd better be ready to do something right now or it will be gone tomorrow.

Both. I have a list of guns I want. If I come across one for a good price and I have the money I buy it. Also, I've been known to buy "interesting" guns at gun shows because I thought they were a good deal at the time.

Both. I spent a year looking for the right Trailside, and six months looking for a Cougar 8045 for my wife, but the AR7, K31, T38, P64, etc. were all just impulse purchases at gun shows because I liked them and they were good deals.

Sometimes, it just totally out of my hands. Like leaving them alone for just a little while; I mean, not very long at all...

And next thing you know...little ones...

Most of my gun purchases are spontaneous. When I buy a gun its usually because I found a good deal on a gun I either know I want or would like to try out.

Seldom, if ever, planned. When something catches my eye I research it on line and then generally get it.

Mercilessly researched to the nth degree. Mrs. McGee would be tickled if it were only days and weeks, but the research phase usually spans many months for me.

Always planned. I have a rule against buying on spur of the moment, unless it costs less than $500. I've planned my next purchase for the last year and a half.

A majority of the time they are well researched. This does not mean I will not make a spontaneous buy. It is only when it is a firearm I am familiar with and at a bargain price.

If I see something in an on-line auction or at a pre-announced live local auction I will research it prior to bidding and/or attending the auction. I will know what I am willing to pay. I will either go by for a viewing or arrive early for the auction to closely inspect an item of interest.

I already have everything I need and only go for good deals.
