Pistols-Politicians cower

On behalf of West Virginians, I have to apologize for this garbage. The gazette has always taken an anti-gun stance, and has always tried to appeal to the hippie and liberal segments of WV. They once even had a front page pic portraying gun owners as apes and neanderthals. You would think that in a state so full of hunters and gun enthusiasts they would know better than to slit their own throats this way, but obvoiusly their editoral staff is made up of the same neo-hippie liberal populace that they so desparately try to appease.

Here in WV, a guy who ran against Bob Wise in the governatorial primaries tried to portray Wise as a gun nut in a TV ad, with guys running around in black ski masks and emptying assault weapons. He got massacred in the polls for his efforts.

Unfortunately, the gazette is one of the most widely distributed papers here in the southern WV area. And almost every week you see some kind of anti-gun propoganda blaring at you from somewhere in their pages (my fiancee buys it to get the sale papers and coupons). I guess they're going by the idea of "if you tell a lie loud enough and often enough....."

They're going to get a SCALDING rebuke from me on this one! I DARE them to print it.

To the Editor;

I just finished reading your misguided article: "Pistols: Politicians Cower". I'd rather attend an event where a few law abiding citizens may be carrying a sidearm than an event in a "gun-free" zone like a high school. When just one or two percent of the general population is armed, the crime rate drops significantly because criminals are AFRAID of armed victims and don't know who is carrying a sidearm (See John Lott's: "More Guns, Less Crime"). As for politicians serving one percent of the population, the Bill of Rights was put there to DEFEND the natural rights of the FEW from being VIOLATED by the government or the majority. I HOPE that the politicians would defend the constitution and our individual rights! The right to defend oneself is a NATURAL right. An armed citizen is the first and best line of crime prevention. Crime is prevented when the potential victim is armed and able to defend him or herself.

I suggest you get your facts straight before publishing such an obviously biased article in the future.

Thank you for your time.

Re: Pistols, Politicians Cower

The old saw, "an armed society is a polite society", is proven by crime stats.

Places like Great Britian, Australia, New York etc where private ownership of defensive weapons is nearly impossible are also the places where a person is most likely to be raped, robbed, mugged, murdered etc.

Your editorial stance seems to reek of communism, disarm the people and control them. Remove the people's means of self defence and make them dependant on the all providant government.

Bookman, look on the paper's masthead and let us know who owns it. I'm guessing it, along with almost all newspapers in America today, large, medium and small, is owned by one of the gigantic syndicates. L.A. Times-Mirror, Knight-Ridder, Gannett, Cox, N.Y Times, Washington Post, Time-Warner, etc etc etc.

Each and everyone of those syndicates has long preached the Marxist Socialist (communistnazi) ideology. Their avowed object is to bring about the institution of their Great Brave New Marxist Socialist Police State Utopia. Therefore, it doesn't matter how many serfs in W.Virg. -- or any other state, for that matter-- own guns, the serfs are to be disarmed. Peiod.

Bookman, thank you for alerting us to the article. It would be nice if they received about 500 courteous/thoughtful letters correcting them.

Here's what I wrote:

To whom it may concern:

I found your August 17 editorial, "Pistols: Politicians Cower", to be quite inaccurate, extremely biased, and downright appalling. To suggest that TRAINED and LICENSED people who carry concealed firearms are a menace to society is reprehensible.

You write that “only a tiny segment of Americans carry loaded pistols in their pockets…99% of people don’t go armed” – but nationwide there are millions of Americans who go though the necessary training and background checks to obtain a license to carry a concealed firearm. Many have a license because they work in dangerous neighborhoods, or because they carry large sums of money, etc. To suggest that these people, common everyday citizens, are “street rowdies carrying sub nosed pistols” and “drug dealers packing Uzis” is utterly sickening. If a person chooses not to carry a firearm for their personal protection and the protection of their family, that’s their own decision. But I will NOT stand idly by and watch as the Gazette uses it’s so called “credentials” to lump law-abiding gun owners with concealed weapons permits into the same heap as drunken thugs and drug dealers. This is the same group of gun owners who votes, and who buys (or doesn’t buy) your newspapers.

It seems like whoever wrote this unintelligent piece of blatant pseudo-journalistic bias has their own view of gun control: the proposition that a woman found dead and raped in an alley, strangled with her own pantyhose, is preferable to allowing that same woman to defend herself with a firearm.

P.S. I know my reply is over the 200 word limit, but your editorial staff won’t have the “grapefruits” to print it anyhow.

Sincerely,
Al Leftwich
