pistol cleaning advice

Im searching for a pistol cleaning kit for my .40 pistol. I have done research and my head is swimming. Im looking for a kit preferrably with a box to store it in and under thirty dollars any help would be appreciated.

Here's my advice. Walmart has a Winchester brand kit with every caliber even shotguns in a decent wood box for under 30 bucks. That and a can of rem oil or wonderlube if you can find it.
That what I use on all my guns. Wonderlube to clean and lube both. I prefer not to use grease. I simply spray a small amount on the grooves in the slide where it joins the frame. Done this since my first gun when I was 17. Never a problem.
Walmart also has a kit with brushes that store in the handle for well under 10 bucks.

Go to Walmart to the fishing section and get a small tray type tackle box, the kind that slides into a bigger box or bag and build one with just the stuff you need.
Not necessarily this one but similar.

I was going to show a picture of one of mine but there seems to be no batteries in the freaking house for the camera.
I use a Plano model 3650.

+1

That is exactly what I did. If you depend on the box that a pre-made kit comes with, you'll find you have no place to put the other little things you'll accumulate. With a tackle box, you can fit q-tips in one tray compartment, "tooth brushes" and a dental pic in another, and some break-free in the place underneath. You can also include a few tools and spare parts kit in there, such as hex keys, screw driver, some punches, the little brass hammer, length of fiber optic for sight, a lighter to mount fiber optic, a recoil spring, slide stop etc.

Those plastic art containers with all the little compartments they sell at Walmart in the craft section are great for small parts, and you can include that in your tackle box too.

The "Winchester" branded cleaning rods and brushes that Walmart sells are total junk. Save your money.

Plano 6101 or 6102 fishing tackle box $10-$15 (6101 has one tray, 6102 has two trays)

Cleaning rod $7. Avoid bore snakes..

Spare jag tips $8

Hoppe's 9 pint solvent $10.

Quart of any 10w40, 5w20, etc.. engine oil or synthetic oil like Mobile 1 preferably $5-$8. One quart of 10w40 should last you through years of handgun shooting

Use old tshirts and clothing for free patches

The Otis cleaning is an overpriced joke compared to a boresnake. I spent over $10,000 (stopped adding once i counted that high) last year on guns/ammo/accessories, as for the cleaning supplies, one boresnake for every caliber except .22, one cheapo $8 black box kit from academy (think its Winchester), a few bottles of rem oil and various Hoppes bottles, a cleaning mat and those silicone infused cloths.

I looked at a vid of the Otis product, it's laughable.

+1,000 on a boresnake.

Oh and lots and lots of time, esp if you have a 1911 that after two shots looks dirtier than my Walther after 500 rounds.

A boresnake, Remoil, and Hoppes #9. Then I use Renessaince wax and occasionaly Pre-Lim to keep my blued guns perdy. Start with the snake and Hoppes and some Viva paper towels, they're lint free. You need a bigger budget to get more stuff but that will get you going just fine.

I can't imagine anyone disagreeing with a boresnake. They work great and save plenty of time.

I don't know what kind of of handgun you shoot but here is all you need.
1.) Short rod (plastic glock rod is the best because you don't nick metal)
2.) toothbrush
3.) Solvent & oil or a good CLP
4.) Patches, rod tips, Q-tips

Optional
bore snake and or Ottis

RamItOne, you are wrong. The Otis tactical clean kit is great and very useful. I keep it in my bag for quick cleaning at the range. I use it frequently mostly for other people since I clean my guns at home.

I also like a Boresnake for final clean and shine but a brush, some patches a rod and hoppes is all u need
