Pistol Case Recommendations for Ruger SBH with 10" barrel

Hello, all.

I recently acquired a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 10.5" barrel, and have been transporting it to and from the range in the plastic case that shipped with the pistol. No problems there.

This afternoon, I replaced the tiny and ergonomically disastrous stock walnut grips with a set of Pachmayr combat-style rubber grips. The Pachmayr grips are very comfortable, but they are significantly larger than the stock grips.

Now to the problem: the pistol will no longer fit in the Ruger factory case due to the bulkier grips. I just returned from a shopping trip to several gun stores and the local Mills Fleet Farm, and could not find a single-pistol case that would fit the SBH. I came across some "oversized" padded pistol pouches, but they were also too small.

Short of getting an unwieldy four-pistol case and placing the SBH diagonally in it, what are my options for cases in which to transport the SBH? For the time being, I can live with transporting it in its original case with the grips removed, but I am sure someone can suggest a better solution.

By the way, the SBH with the Pachmayr grips installed measures approximately 17" in length and 7" in height. Its longest dimension (from the forward tip of the front sight to the rear of the grip's base) is about 18".

As always, thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or recommendations!

If you like the hard cases, there are a number of manufacturers who make pistol cases that will fit the longer barrelled handguns. These include Pelican, Starlight, Doskocil/Gun Guard, SKB, Browning (who I think Pelican makes cases for), among others. These are generally bigger in external dimensions as the OE plastic gun cases but they can be custom fitted tot he particular gun internally if you get the models with the Pick-N-Pluck-type foam interior. They are usually also water (and air) tight.

If you don't mind the soft cases, there are also quite a number of manufacturers for those also. These include Ace Case, Bagmaster, etc. From my experience, though, you might want to stay away from a soft case with a nylon interior lining. It helps keep moisture out but it also does a good job keeping moisture in. A cloth or open cell foam interior and/or wrapping or placing the gun in a silicone rag or silicone treated 'sock' helps prevent any oxidation. One of the best places to find a soft case is at a gun show.

The soft cases, though, have seemed to be of slightly lower quality than the ones I got a number of years ago. I have a Ruger Super Redhawk (9½" with scope) AND a Desert Eagle (14" with scope) in a rectangular Bagmaster. One sits inside the interior pouch to seperate the two.

For the more expensive guns, I use a Doskocil/Gun Guard All Weather hard case. Although I used the Pick-N-Pluck to fit the guns in the foam, a better tighter fit could have been made if I would have cut the foam unstead. The relatively rigid foam is easy to cut with a sharp knife. The Starlights and Pelicans tend to be on the more expensive side and Doskocil/Gun Guard has lower cost comparable models. Good places to find and examine the hard cases are at gun shows and sporting goods stores.

Hksigwalther,

Thank you, sir, for your recommendations and suggestions. Now I have a better idea of what cases are available.

Thanks again!
