Pistol Caliber Carbines-new/old

Well, nowdays we call them PCCs, or pistol caliber carbines. We talk the relative merits of the new Rugers, the H&K models and so forth.

But if the caliber is 9mm, why not just use an UZI?

Is the UZI still reliable? The one I fired could produce hits on a sihouette to 200 yards. No plastic parts that I recall, so melt-downs would not be a problem. And even with the non-registered 16-inch barrel, it folds down to a very compact size!

So, aside from caliber for the .40 models, how are the newer PCCs better than a good old UZI? What do they do better?

Barrel Length

A nice carbine has an 18" barrel (although some are 16"). This gives you greater accuracy than a pistol. A carbine also has a normal shoulder stock under most circumstances. Keep in mind, there are always exceptions with the different barrel lengths and stocks out there. Last I heard, an UZI was a pistol available with a "wire" stock. The grip is in the center as it is designed for one handed shooting. This pretty much balances it. I know they do make an UZI with a 16" barrel so us Americans can play too, but it just doesn't seem right. With today's cartridges, being able to fire your pistol round through that long tube not only increases accuracy, but velocity as well. I tremble at the thought of getting hit with a 9x19mm or 40S&W coming from an 18" tube at me. Also, the idea of a carbine (such as Ruger's) accepting your pistol mags is very practical.

Uzi doesn't get longer sight radius with a longer barrel. Personally, I'd like to see a PPS43 re-issued. It is a perfect low-cost effective weapon and if 7.62Tokarev isn't to your liking, 9x19 would work with only a slight re-design (i.e. Spanish DUX-44). Of course, both are open bolt and would require extensive re-engineering to fire from closed bolt.

Why not just borrow the MP5 carbines from the ATF employees? I am sure they won't object.

Mech Tech makes a carbine conversion for 1911 style guns.

Let's not get confused with the micro-UZI pistol, which I have very little data on.

The UZI of which I speak was modifed from an SMG design which was originally fielded with a wood stock, came in Models "A" (eas to convert to full-auto) and "B" (problem fixed), and had a 16-inch barrel.

Didn't someone start making UZIs in Texas or somewhere in the U.S., a few years after G.W.Bush's daddy did the treacherous import ban?

I really like the peep sights with 100M zero and a flip-up aperature for 200M! It just does not seem possible that the newer PCCs (except for 9mm AR-15s) could be a durable as the UZI...

My 9mm AR colt with an aimpoint is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. i had an uzi years ago and it was the ultimate in reliability as is the colt (If you use colt mags) but alas the colt is more fun and the stock (even the collapsible one) feels better on your face an the uzi...Dick...By the way mine is a takedown and you can see pictures on AR15.com...Dick

I have one and love it. Great house gun. Buy a box of corbons and a 30 round mag. You've got 22 pistol noise and 30 rounds of 357 pistol power. If you put a red dot on it then it becomes a gun even a first time shooter can shoot well with.

Best Regards
Sam

I still think all the new hi-tec stuff comes up wanting in many cases compared to a old POS M-1 carbine. What about the hoze them up the nose M-2. I would never waste my money on a 9mm "burp gun" but thats just my opinion related to what use I have for that type of weapon.:)

the 30 cal m-1 carbine is one of the 20-30 must have guns-the only reason i ever get rid of one is to get a better one. i always look at the brass salesman at gunshows for a couple of hundred once fired-go home and load them and put them in the ammo cans. go to enough gun shows and you will have a bunch of ammo. i guess it will come in handy when i'm arming up the neighborhood when SHTF. i'll be shooting an AR...Dick

Oleg,

The Germans, in fact, captured so many PPSh subguns in the Soviet Union in the early days of the war that they did convert and issue thousands.
