Pistol and carry recomendations for running

I am looking for suggestions on the best pistol, holster, and carry location for running.

I live out in the country and my average run is about 6-8 miles. My wife started getting into it until she was attacked by a Pitbull earlier this summer while running, now she is scared to run or ride her bike around our neighborhood. Today I was out for a run and had a 100 lbs Pitbull try and run me down. Luckily when I turn to fight and started running toward him, he stopped about 10 feet away and ran back. He tried to re-engage two more times before I could cleanly (and safely) break contact.

I am not blaming the dog, this is all owner training. Unfortunately over the last few years, some less than respectable people have moved in and starting to buy dogs and train them to attack.

So any ideas out there for make/model, holster, and where to carry while running? I was thinking about a Ruger LCP .380 with a good round. I want to carry on my person, not in a bag, so it is readily accessible. I am not sure where to carry so it doesn't rub on long runs (13+ miles) or move around too much.

Looking for suggestions and thanks in advance.

I've logged many miles with an SR9c in a fanny pack made for carry. It takes a little getting used to, but I don't notice it much anymore. The advantage of it is I can carry a few other things including a 2 or 3 oz Fox Labs pepper spray. I have not had to use my pistol, but have stopped a couple of large ornery dogs with the spray. One German Shepherd took a couple of doses but did not get close enough for me to have to shoot him. I did have my right hand on the pistol, and had he not backed off when he did I would have.

Living in a rural area, and enjoying trail running and hiking, I had a couple of tense encounters with dogs and people. Even in town running a track, I wear my fanny pack. I have tried carrying my LCP in a pocket or on a belt. Yes, a fanny pack may move a little, but it offers a quick draw and some protection from sweat. It works better for me.

For several years I ran distance races from 5K up to half-marathon, also biathlons, and one triathlon. I never carried any weapon. A Ruger LCP .380 in a Smart Carry waist band fabric holster is my recommendation. Dog owners are responsible for their dogs. Communicating with local law enforcement may be called for.

Edit: Biathlons were summer events - biking and running; not the winter event of skiing and shooting rifles.

Nosab,

I run five miles twice a week for the past fifteen years and always carry a SW 642 revolver in a waist-fanny pack and a five foot long rattan stick. I have been attacked by dogs twentysix times (where they run in close to bite my legs, not just close barking) so an average of about twice a year. A well placed whack to their face or shoulder has been enough to deter further aggression although I have had a few repeat customers. Now we have an arrangement where they bark at reasonable distances so they feel they are doing their job and they don't get whacked. I have not had to draw my pistol yet.

The SW is light and does not bounce against important body parts like a heavier pistol that I tried.

Good luck in your quest- oldandslow

I think a batton of some sort is a reasonable choice. I would love to carry a collapsible batton. While a gun is legal here, a collapsible batton is not.

Beretta Pico is a very flat, lightweight 7 shot .380 that could be carried easily while running.
