Pillar Bedding a Savage

Like everyone else I read as much as I could, then reread every thing again, moved slow and try not to do anything stupid. While the road to the target below took a bit of a detour it was worth the effort. The first three shots after pillar bedding measured 3 1/2". Each group shrank by appox 1" untill they setteled on 3/4". The rear action screw loosened up and the groups started to open up as well. Upon discovering this I tracked down a torque wrench and tightened both action screws. Tightening from the back to the front in 10" pound increments untill I reached 50" pounds. Went to the range and this is the result, the 3 shots on the left measure 3/8" center to center, pay no attention to the forth shot.:D

The rifle is a Savage 110 in 30-06, the best shooting rifle I've ever had!

Did you check to see whether there was any epoxy in the front receiver screw hole? It doesn't seem that you should need 50 inch-pounds of torque to get a pillar-bedded rifle to shoot well.

Did you relieve the bottom of the recoil plate by using tape? If not, it should be routed out, so the action doesn't rock on the plate.
 
Yes I did relieve the front and bottom of the plate (lug ?) with tape, and there is no bedding material in the action screw holes. The torque may be a bit high but thats where it is. How many inch pounds would you recommend, and would both action screws receive the same torque?

And there I was all fat and happy!;)
 
Your torque is a bit higher than I like, which is about 40-45 lbs on the front screw and 38-40 on the rear, but as long as it's bearing where it's supposed to and shooting like it is, go with it!

I was thinking about backing off on the rear action screw to see if the groups would improve. I've got al-l-l-l spring and summer to tweak this thing, and probably will. While I am happy with the results so far, there may be room for improvement.

Oldav why won't I pay any attention to the flyer?:rolleyes: I get them too it's called thinking California, when I should be thinking titegroup. Or did someone else shoot your target.
Funny story comes to mind, I was having a great day at the range, hell I didn't have to even squeeze any rounds off,,,, no fooling,, but I had many holes in my target. I looked over the booth walll to the young fellas next to me (who were shooting and auto) "hey you guy's are blasting holes through my target!!!!" and guess what the young man said,,, and I quote:" are the groups tight?" :eek::o:(:D
 
last trip to the range i was setup out at 100 yards. had a guy come in and set up his target at 25 yards , right in front of mine!:eek: luckily i caught it before he shot at it
