I was in the lgs, they had a 36 cal remington 1858 marked as a uberti for $200. upon examination it was an unfired pietta 6 1/2” not uberti, I offered $180 and we had a deal. I took the pistol down and found all the screws snug [no abused screw heads] not tight, but all looked new and unfired inside, bore was good, no rust anywhere. The year is cc = 2008. I find the trigger to be best described as a 2 stage military trigger, and the main spring is stiff even with the adjusting screw backed off. I did stone the parts with a very fine ruby stone before I assembled. I plan 17 grains t7 3fg powder with .375 swagged balls for now and put a 100 rounds though it , then see about the trigger.
 
I think you got a very fair deal at 180. I bought 0ne new at Cabelas and later came across another one for 150. I very much enjoy them. Enjoy, but remember a pair is more fun.
 
I did pick up a 44 rem 1858 during the cabelas dec sale. Regarding the main spring tension, the 2008 has a hump in the frame behind the spring adjusting screw that limits how much the tension can be reduced, the 2013 44 is flat in that area and the spring tension can be adjusted lower. Can I file that hump off to duplicate the 2013 frame, or should I use one of the methods to reduce the main spring by removing material from the spring? I also did some stone work on the trigger and got the creep out.
 
I have one that I got in a round about "horse trade" that was brand new. I've had it a few years and I like it a lot. Fun to shoot and although I'm partial to '52 Navies, this Remy is a "keeper". I use about 18 gr. 3F and a .375 ball - it shoots well and its accuracy is only limited by me! :D

When I got home from work today I removed the grips from both pietta's to find both frames are the same, my error. So back to the main spring material removal
 
The mainspring on ours is mighty fine. They are fun to shoot, the more powder we loaded in the chambers, the more accurate it was! It shoots Kaido conicals just as accurate with round ball too. Heck, it even fired 4Fg powder with no problem either. I just love the sound they make when shooting supersonic conicals or round ball!
 
I stoned some material off both sides of the spring and got the hammer pull closer to my 2013 pietta. The adjusting screw had to be filed down so it would be flush with the frame, rather than sticking up like the proverbial nail. Now the trigger and hammer are close to the 2013. Range time today.

Question? Why the light 18 gr loads? I shoot 22 in my Colt clones.
Boy I'd love to come across that Cabela's sale. Didn't know about it.
Better yet, a $150 deal like a couple of you found.
The Remington Police would make a fine back-up for the short .44 '58.

I bought a Euroarms .36 Remington NMA and an R&D conversion cylinder for $325.00 a few years ago. The Euroarms is a lot closer to the originals in size than either Pietta or Ubert. It is a nice gun to shoot, very natural pointing.
 
I fired 15,17,20,22 grains of t7 3g offhand, seems happy with any load, but if pressed I would say 22 was the leader. I was surprised to find it shooting about 4” low @ 20 yds, then in this case it is easier to remove metal from the front sight than add. Did a little more stone work on the trigger last night, but I can still see the hammer move when the trigger pulled, the hammer movement is similar to my 2013 44, which is about twice as much as my ruger oa.
