Pietta 1862 Police .36 Vs. Pietta 1851 Navy .36:

For general shooting, and even perhaps some light hunting in a survival scenario, which pistol do you think is best and why????

I appreciate your input...

I would choose the 1851 navy. Unless you are concerned with size, weight, or concelament, a compact .36 does not offer any advantages over the full sized, original navy model. The disadvantages to me would be a grip even smaller than the 51 and reportedly more problems with jamming from spent caps.

Chaz

Isn't the Pietta 1862 Police & Pietta 1851 basically the same revolver both six shots same frame, just different barrels and cylinders?
That said I would pick either one, I do like the looks of their 1862 Police.

The 5 shot Uberti is a smaller frame and the video I saw he had lots of problems with the caps jamming the gun.

Yes,

The Pietta 1862 is made on the 1851 frame and is six-shot. Any accuracy gain at handgun ranges from the 7-1/2" over the 5-1/2" barrels????

I have noticed a definate "Barrel Heaviness" to my Piettia Police ove a '51 , 36 LOndon Model. Not bad just heavier...
Function fit and finish are first rate with the Piettia and I especally like the non-traditional 6 shot cylinder and full size .36 frame!
The power and velocity of a 22gr powder load behind the .36 ball make for a deep penetrating nard hitting load! I would not doubt it for a self-defense load.
DIfferent mechanics come into play shooting a round ball against a conical bullet. Though many have compared (due to the math) the .36 C&B to the .32 Long Colt but I have to disagree due to the deep penetrating Ball.
Just note Hickock's shooting across the square where his Ball pierced clothing , flesh, and bone to complete a Heart shot. I doubt the .32 Long colt could make such a claim.
The .36 has been a noted manstopper during and after the Civil War and people are just as tough and dense today, with lighter clothing to deflect a Ball.

I like the 7-1/2" barrel for its accuracy and velocity potential, but like the 5-1/2" barrel for portability. Decisions, decisions!!!!

I plan on taking these up in the mountains on some extended trips. I like the '51 as well, but something makes me feel the '62 with its short barrel would be a better self defense pistol...

@ZVP:

How is the accuracy????

Maybe, but I have never been THAT lucky.

I do have a very old pair of Armi San Marco's with consecutive numbers, but they are also a bit rough, not guns I would want to carry.....

You could end up with consecutive numbers, but it takes commitment.
When I bought my .44 Marshalls I called Cabelas and talked to the "Gun Guy" in customer support and made a specific demand.
It didn't hurt to use a little blackmail (the Cust.service guy approved & even helped the ruse) by insisting on my requirement of consecutive numbers, otherwise I would change my order and only buy one.
It worked for me. But once they were also able to review my purchase history they really didn't mind accommodating me.
About the '62 Police, the first one I was sent had to go back because I wasn't going to accept (and then have to fix) a brand new gun with timing problems. The next one was perfect in that respect.

Timing....

I have a Pietta 1858 Remington that is very old and perfect in that regard. I bought a second one (Uberti Remington 1858) in 1997 from Cabelas and the timing was so far off it was ridiculous. I sent it back.

Hopefully, this '62 will be in good shape...

10851Man,

I have a Pietta 1862 New York Metropolitan Police. Same thing as Pietta's 1862 Army Police with the exception of a nickle plated brass backstrap and trigger guard. Don't know why Pietta chose the goofy names for these pistols as they of navy caliber (.36) ,not a 5 shot pocket pistol, and have the shorter Navy grip. What they are is basicaly a 5 1/2 in barrel or so called sherriff model 1861 Navy with half flutted cylinder. I purchased a 7 1/2 inch Pietta 1851 barrel and loading lever from Taylors and Company for and it works like a champ. Currently have both barrels sent to a gunsmith to have a taller dovetailed brass front sight installed. Something kinda cool about these pistols is they are 4 screw models cut for a shoulder stock. Not sure if the Pietta 1860 Army stock will fit properly due to the shorter grip and so called Pietta tail. I know another fella who successfuly mounted the Pietta stock to a 4 screw Uberti 1861 Navy (although bunch of threads were exposed when the heel hook was tightened) Recently aquired a Pietta 1860 Army and the wife has given me the go ahead to get a shoulder stock for it sos I will have see how it fits on the Pietta 62 and let you know.

Smiling Bob :D

IMHO, the Pietta '62 Police .36 is perfectly sized, short enough for concealment and long enough for good accuracy over moderate distances...

Plus it's a gorgeous gun!!!!
