Pietta 1858 RNMA Plunger ?

Looking into the concaved pocket of the loading plunger of my 1858 Remy I see that the surface isn't smooth and spherical, it has what seems to be a deliberate and symmetrical irregular surface. I first noticed this when looking at the front of the cylinder and the balls all had this strange imprint into them.

My question, is there a reason for this, or is it a defect that I should correct ?

TIA for any comments,
Rich

My New Pietta Remington does this same thing, leaves a weird imprint on the ball. But its facing up, and doesn't seem to affect accuracy so I just keep blasting away. I just choked it up to machining marks on the plunger.

I also thought that it was just tooling artifacts, but a machinist friend of mine said that he had never seen anything like it and couldn't explain how it was made or why. He did comment that it looked to have been intentional. ?????
