Pietta 1858 headed my way: And it's all your fault

I asked you guys to talk me out of buying the 1858 Remington, which you all failed to do miserably. By Tuesday next week (if the mail delivers it on time) I will be the proud owner of my own 1858 Remington, complete with powder, wads, balls, and caps. :D

I couldn't resist it anymore. Seeing all the talk in this forum didn't help. Five years ago when I started shooting, I thought that plastic tactical bricks were the ultimate mark of a real firearms enthusiast. But slowly I found myself purchasing metal framed pistols with wooden grips, rifles with wooden stocks, revolvers.....and it was only a matter of time before I would start craving black powder muzzle loaders. I wonder what's next for me, flintlocks?

The Firing Line has turned me from a plastic brick "tacticool" novice into a real hardcore firearms enthusiast.

Welcome to the dark side. Soon you will come to understand smokeless powder is just a passing fad.

American Eagle . . . What!!!! You mean they actually make guns out of plastic!!!!:D

Like you . . . I too prefer the more "vintage" guns actually made out of metal . . . from eras when "guns were guns".

As far as the blame for your purchase . . . that's alright . . . we have broad shoulders here and will accept the blame. . . . this time. Just remember that these are habit forming . . . trust me . . . there WILL be more in your future! :)

Hawg. I never shot a flintlock.

Oh you poor thing. I haven't shot one in many years. I had one when I was 13 but it was a POS. I have shot good ones since but I don't see one in my immediate future.

The next thing you know, you'll be wanting to know what are and what are the differences between a hand cannon, a match lock, a wheel lock, a snap lock, a snap haunce, a Miquelet and a Flint lock. Then you'll want to know what a "Maynard tape primer" is. Then of course there's the cartridge pinfires/teatfires and how they work. Before you know it you'll be looking up who invented mercury fulminate and the percussion cap and Confederate steam cannons. Oops! I just added to your new addiction's curiosity! Lol.

Truth be told, they were going to call this forum "The Enablers", but then our little secret would be given away. "Black Powder and Cowboy Action Shooting" is just our secret identity. :D

Flintlocks, matchlocks, wheellocks...Bill's got you headed in the right direction!

Got mine last week and took it out over the weekend. On our next "zombie" shoot it's going with me. No auto's going to do it all blackpowder. 1858, coach gun, and the Sharps.

Sorry, you'll get no sympathy from me! I just took possession of my first 1858: a 5-1/2-inch Pietta. Got it to the range for the first time this morning. She is sweet! Likes CCI #11 caps better than #10s. Here are cylinders 5 and 6, 12 shots, 15 yards, one hand, unsupported (sorry for the crappy cell phone pic). 25 grains Goex FFFg, lubed wad, and .454 swaged ball. The marks at the top of the paper and just left of the target circle are wads that marked but didn't penetrate the target. Not too bad for not being fully broken in yet!

She's my first Remington clone ... but no doubt won't be the last!
