Pictures of my new (used) 870 Wingmaster

Decided against the Police model and bought an older Wingmaster. I don't think it had been fired much at all. It had a dowel in the tube which limited it to 2 rounds (which I removed) - I thought it was clean at the shop, but a little Flitz and it REALLY looks good now. That stuff is amazing, you think there isn't any rust but there will be brown on the rag. Here is a pic of my new toy:

Covet, covet(G)....

Looks like a classic, my best guess is late 60s, early 70s from the padless stock and ribless bbl.

I suggest no major changes on this one except adding a pad and getting the fit right.

IOW, this isn't the best choice for a "Serious" makeover. Beater police turnins are. For HD, this one will do well with that bunty bbl on it.

And don't worry if it's ONLY 2 3/4" gun. It's too pretty to take into a salt march anyways.

It is 2.75" only. That's OK with me. I shot a box of shells and it kicks pretty hard with no recoil pad. I paid $200 out the door.

Another pic with the short barrel. This is the only mod I'll make. No mag extensions etc.. Maybe a recoil pad. 4 shells are enough for me.

$200 was a steal. That would have been a good price with only one barrel, given that the gun is in such nice shape. Why is that everyone else seems to run up on these deals?

Looks like my first 870 that I gave up when Uncle Sam owned my butt.

Wish I still had it. It went into many a salt marsh and never complained. Had to fish it out of the water a couple of times and at least once It was covered in ice. Spent most of the week between weekend duck hunts in the trunk of my 59 chevy and still looked good.

Dave is right, get a beater to customize, leave this one as it is.:D

You did good:cool:

$200 was a great price. A Pachmyer Decellerator pad is effective and fits in with the esthetics on this one, no white spacers.

And, a stock, short bbled 870 is a fearsome weapon at close quarters in trained, cool hands.

The short barrel was purchased prior to the shotgun from a fellow TFL'r. The shotgun was $200 which is an OK deal. They had two others to choose from. A real nice one with vent rib for $279 (fixed full) and another with a mod choke (fixed) for $229 that was a little more used. It seems like there might be some people trading in some of the older guns with fixed full chokes since you can't shoot steel shot out of them. They can trade them in and buy an Express for about $225 with Remchokes. Personally, I like the older guns and since I don't currently hunt it doesn't make that big a difference to me if it has a fixed choke.

Steel will go through a fixed Modified w/o stress most of the time. And,with the non tox alternatives coming along(Albeit expensive) there'll be less need for steel.

Me, I think I'd prefer the older models, and if I saw those you turned down, I might make Mrs McC mad again.
