Here our some picture from our Texas hog hunt. We where able to take a total of six pigs. These pictures are after our first night hunt were we harvested 4 hogs. From left to right we have a 100 lbs boar, put down with my .223 ar. Next to it is a 250 lbs boar, my buddy shot him with a .308 dpms ar 10. The next larger one is a 175 lbs sow, and the smaller white and black one was 115 lbs sow, both were taken with a .223 ar. Won't be able to post pictures of our last two pigs that where taken the following night, cant seem to find our camera. No worries tho, they where just 100 lbs. meat hogs. It was an awesome hunt, we plan on going again next winter! :D

Good job on the walking garbage cans. I'm beginning to really hate these vermin. One fellow at the club has trapped 40+ since the deer season ended and another 20 have probably been shot.

Thanks! I perfer there meat than store bought pork. When prepared properly it seems to be a lot more tender and makes for a good meal! Not to disagree that there garbage cans! That's exactly what that big boar was, he was donated!

Do you soak the wild hog meat in ice water for a few days before cooking?

We find that really makes the meat taste much better, especially if they were "excited", when they were killed.

I don't soak it i bleed it out. I keep the meat in a cooler with ice and as the ice melts i drain it and put new ice back in. With hogs i do this for 48 hours. And your(DixieboyFL) 100% right it makes the meat taste much better!

.223 nice...
I keep hearing you need a big gun for a hog. Then I hear a hog guide says 22lr is fine. or even a 9mm pistol.
looks like fun.

the pet shop sells slices of hog snout for dogs to eat.

Its funny that you brought that up, I had a ton of people tell me that a .223 was not big enough for hogs!! I reloaded sierra match king bthp 69 grain, and they did the job. I was actually impressed with the damage they did. Not one hog was lost, they dropped on the spot. And if you plan on taking more than one hog out of a herd, the .223 WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN. The last hog we took was shot with a .357 pistol, had cheap led tip ammo. Not only did we have to put another round in her, but the .357 did not even come close to the damage the .223 did. Probably do to the cheap ammo?

Here's a few I knocked off in the last twelve months down here. No monsters among them, but they look different to yours up there a bit, from the photos of yours.

Have dusted a few more in that time but these are probably the pick of them.

Mostly using a Marlin GBL in 45-70 and sometimes an old Mauser 1897 sporterised.

I have read recommendations for the hog gun-usually larger than 243. I suspect most of the recommenders have only shot hogs on the internet.

bobnob, good job on your hog hunts!!!!

gaseousclay, I don't think there bacon taste any different. But i bleed my meat out in a cooler and that seems to take any gamey taste out. IMHO, I think deer meat is more gamey tasting than hog meat. Unless its a mature boar over 150 lbs, there RANK and will taste RANK too!:barf:

223 MatchKing vs 357

Sway

Your question concerning the greater amount of damage to a hog with 223 Matchkings versus 357 is easy to answer. The primary reason is how the Matchking is constructed: with a very thin copper jacket and hollow point. Such a bullet will greatly expand and likely fragment after hitting a hog. They are designed for target shooting and Sierra does not recommend Matchkings for hunting. Nice piggies.

I like reading about how to prep feral hogs for consumption as well as which ones are better tasting. I would not have known to soak the meat in ice water. Thats good to know because I believe I finally have a line on a hunt near comanche tx. Hate to get back to KS and have nothing but a bunch of dog food.

Tuzo,

I've read on Sierra's web-site that there not recommended for hunting. And they may know A LOT more than I do, but I use them for hunting all the time. I have never believed in buying different ammo every time I hunt a different species. I've taken coyotes, bobcats, hogs and deer. All using the same 69grain bthp, and I have not lost one animal or not had one drop on the spot. Maybe they do not want us to know that there btwh are better for hunting than there "game" bullets? Bc I have gone hunting with friends using 55 grain core locks, and have witnessed there game just run off. Especially coyotes...
