Pics of the Indiana Jones/Gangster Era outfit....

Yeah, I'm a geek.....I know. However, several asked for an update on the rebluing/retouching job on that 1931 Colt Official Police I bought on a whim last month and here it is - with the vintage leather I tracked down for a complete outfit! The gunbelt makes for a nice wall-mount when I hang this outfit in the gunroom - it is one of my more asked about "conversation pieces" I have now.

Nice looking revolver and holster rig. But Indiana Jones used a flap holster originally made for the Webley revolver. Yours reminds me of the type of revolvers and holsters used in the old 1950's "Jungle Jim" movies and t.v. shows back when I was a boy. You know the shows where they were in Africa and on Safari or something and wore the pith helmets, khaki pants and shirt (or sometimes khaki podpurs). Always with some sweet thing good looking female in pith helmet on the safari too just to add spice and complicate things. But of course! Cheeta the chimp could only hold the audience's attention for just so long since he was largely the comic relief anyway. Had to have the obligatory good looking female in the show either as the love interest or just as eye candy spice. Lol.

Same thing in the Tarzan movies and sometimes seen in old movies and t.v. shows featuring a circus lion tamer. Saw similar fixed rear sight and "half moon" front sight revolvers and holster rigs like that in all those old "Lost city" in a jungle somewhere movies. I remember one with a lost city like that with Charleston Heston and they used revolvers and holster rigs like that. I'd say that style revolver and holster rig was prevalent from the 1930's through the 1950's. Not really an Indiana Jones holster rig (since his was a Webley flap holster), but definitely from the same Indiana Jones style/genre of movies and t.v. shows drawing on or from the time period of the 1930's through the 1950's.

It is a nice conversation piece, and functional too. Nice looking collector's piece. So's the revolver. And what the heck, hang a whip and brown fedora up next to it and most people don't know nor remember what or if Indiana used a Webley flap holster anyway, so if you want to tell them it's an "Indiana Jones" style holster, go for it. They probably won't know the difference, and you wouldn't be lying, because it IS an Indiana Jones era/style (for that time period) holster (and revolver),.....just not the same ones used by Indiana.

Correct on all accounts Bill^^^^

Because I AM that big of an IJ geek.......I did consider getting a flap holster, but none presented themselves - at least in usable condition. The Sportsmans Guide does have a neat flap repro holster but it is a US military model and would not have been any more true to the movie....but if anyone has on old S&W or Colt WWII revolver it would be cool.

Those holsters were of the type that Hunter Holsters (inexpensive), made during the 60's and 70's. They were quite common and were made for almost all the popular guns.

Fedora?

Haha on all of you! I DO own a fedora - two of them, in fact. You can find really nice vintage ones on Ebay for around $15-$20 if you are looking to put together an Indiana costume - I have done it several times. All you do is pair that fedora with some work kakhi pants, work boots, a leather jacket, (I have all these even without trying) and said whip. Now so we don't go off topic and this reply gets deleted (JK), Indiana DOES use a Colt Official Police in one of the films - I think in the chase scene in #2 when the Chinese are shooting at him in the car....too lazy to go to IMFDB to look it up. BTW, this particular gun appeared to have hardly ever fired - no wear on the recoil shield, no cylinder ring, just missing some areas of bluing - probably from years of holster wear. It shoots pretty sweet also, although the "holding it slightly pointed downward because of the half moon sights" thing takes a little getting used to....

Jaughtman, you can find many different sources for a reproduction (or original) Webley flap holster on ebay. I've looked at many repro Webley flap holsters available on ebay for very reasonable prices and those are exactly the same as the one used by Indy (except not weathered and distressed like Indy's).

Then of course to continue collecting Indy stuff, you have to get the Webley .455 revolver Indy used in "Last Crusade", and the modified four inch barrel S&W 1917 he used in I believe it was "Raiders", plus the revolver he dropped outside of the taxi in "Temple of Doom", plus the 1911 and Hi power he used briefly in "Raiders". And of course you have to get the gas mask bag with strap he used for carrying his notebook and different things. Then there's the actual exact reproduction of his fedora (WAY overpriced) and there are even several different styles/versions of the fedora, that were used from one movie to the next. The list goes on and on!

Yep, I'm a big Indy fan too. :)

Oh I love this. What would be a good gangster era setup for a S&W Victory? Would anybody have used the lanyard ring? Also, I inherited my grandfathers win 94 and a rig like this would go nice with it. I believe the win is late 50's and I think my Victory is late 50's so they are from the same era and would look nice together.

Webley repro holster (IMA-USA), Brazilian Contract 1917 (gun show, I'm not cutting the barrel down and can live with the parkerizing), "Raiders" holster (Todd's Costumes, the one they sell now looks different and is less expensive, Western Stage Props sells one that looks like this one), all set atop a repro British MkVII respirator haversack with leather strap (What Price Glory).

I have used the Raiders holster to transport/carry various K frames, it's for this one now:

Seems like my Highway Patrolman would fit, but I would have to cut a notch out for the adjustable sight.

BTW, jaughtman, I dig your rig. Like the cartridge belt with a DA revolver, of which you have a fine specimen.

Well, crud.....

I started this thread meaning it as an "Indy Jones/Prohibition gangster" ERA rig (which it is), but you all have my authentic-Indy envy going.....I am renaming it the "1930's and 1940's" adventure movie rig and starting me a real Indy rig....LOL. First to find an affordable Webley......

J

P.S. I suppose the Official Police in that rig serves as a "real" Indy gun (Temple of Doom), and I DO also have a BHP (Raiders) so maybe I could just put one of them in the Webley holster....

I can't believe I'm going to admit my knowledge of the existence of this, but you might could find some useful info here.

I don't dress up on the weekends. Anyone who does, more power to 'em. It's a free country. I've found my stuff to be cool and even useful.

I will admit to feeling a bit wistful when I saw a nice whip at the Cattle Barn flea market in Fort Worth last weekend.
