Picked up S&W Model 681 from layaway

Picked up my Model 681-1 today from the LGS where I had it on layaway.

It was re-imported to the US by Century International, and was a police gun in supposedly either Canada or France. The gun is in great shape with only a few minor scuffs, and is mechanically excellent.

This gun, like a few other 681s I've read about was accidentally stamped "686" with the number 1 stamped over the last numeral.

I cleaned the gun up and gave it a light polishing with Flitz. The stocks are a set I bought from an eBay seller in Thailand. They have a S&W medallion on the right side.

Don't know how it shoots because I just brought it home.

Man, that's the second X81 we've seen in this forum in a week. I wish we had some solid production numbers, because it's been my experience that these 581s & 681s are in drastically shorter supply than their adjustable-sight counterparts. Either I'm not looking hard enough (unlikely), or they are scarce in my circles.

Your revolver looks fantastic. Myself, I'd be afraid of the Flitz -- though it sure looks incredible in the picture, Flitz will forever be an abrasive and I can't bear the thought of applying an abrasive to fine handgun...but I can admit that I don't know squat about polishing.

There was a day (long in the past now) where the only double-action revolver that truly looked "right" to me was one with a 6-inch barrel, but I've grown up since then. Yours looks awfully good.

Beautiful gun. As someone who has a strong preference for fixed-sight guns, I'd be sure to jump on something like this if I ever saw one.

Answering my own question...
Apparently an American made gun that is exported, if re-imported, has to have a similar stamp on it. Century Arms International is the CAI imprint. So the gun's been out of the country, now it's back.

I'd love to see a 2 1/2 barrel fixed sighted version with round butt...

Now I also have a GP100, 3 inch, fixed sighted with CAI stamped on it. Word is it came from Canada as the cops (or anybody) can personally own any handgun less than 4.2 inch barrels. It was a police trade in and it is a dandy!
