Picked up a 629 classic...

It has the 5 inch barrel. I'm not into handloading yet, so I'm looking for some good commercial loads in either 44 mag and 44 special. Any suggestions? A good, cheap, but accurate target or plinking round is what I'm after. Thanks

First of all CONGRATULATIONS on a great gun, I have the same gun and I love it, Ala Dan also is a big fan of his 629 Classic with a 5in barrel. Now to answer your question, I have tried American Eagle 240gr jacketed hollow point and they work well for me. As far a 44 special goes I really haven't tried any yet so I am interested to hear what everyone else has to say. I would also suggest that you get into handloading soon if you want to shoot a lot, it makes it so much easier and cheaper.

I highly recommend Georgia Arms .44 sp ammo. I use it for target silhouette competition. Very accurate and fairly mild.

Greeting's Friend's-

Let me offer my congratulations on your selection, as
well. Kcustom45 is correct, I do LOVE my 5" barrel S&W
629-5 "Classic".:D As a matter of fact, I shot it last
Saturday (Nov. 9th); using some of my handload's.
For general target shooting and/or plinking using
factory fodder, I like the Remington-UMC 180 grain
JSP's. Reason? Excellent brass for handloading; and
after all, brass is the most expensive component.
I too, have never shot any factory .44 Special's. I think
they are almost as expensive as .44 magnum round's?
But, I do "download" some lighter .44 caliber rounds
using the magnum brass.:) :D  I'm not near my
book's right now; or I would be glad to share my own
receipe!

Best Wishes,

I have found that factory Fiocchi 240gr SP's are very accurate in my 6.5" Classic. However, the gun doesn't shoot Specials all that well, at least not as accurate as magnum loads.

Congrats! I've got the same gun.

As the cost of .44mag and .44spl is quite a bit more than what I'm used to paying, I tried to skimp with some Blazer. The firing pin went through the primer on a round and, as a result, the firing pin was welded forward. Had to send it back to S&W. They just fixed it and I only had to pay for shipping. But, still, I was without my gun for a few weeks.

I posted this incident on another forum specifically recommending against Blazer. I got a lot of replies saying they've used it with no problems and would continue to do so. To each his own.

Just thought I'd share my experience.

Take care.

Excellent choice, you will enjoy your purchase. I think the Winchester white box rounds make a great choice for target shooting or any other use.

Ahhh...44 Mag N frame. That's a gun my collection needs, but I haven't found the right gun at the right price yet. Did add a nice 4" Model 57 last year - but since my daughter has 2 years left at the university, my collection has more chance of shrinking that expanding!

Anyway - nice gun purchase!

Thanks!

Thanks for all the info everyone. I'm still waiting out the CA 10 day purgatory, but will have it in hand by next weekend! I'm going out this afternoon to see what ammo I can pick up local. Ammo cost for this gun may be my excuse to start reloading. I keep thinking about it, just have not put the time in yet.

Thanks again.
