A friend has asked me about a good, economical pistol for concealed carry. He's looked at the ones listed below, but only in the shop. The local range doesn't have them for rental so he can't try them out. He wants something bigger than a 9mm, and he needs to keep things around the $400 mark. He's reluctant to buy a used pistol because he won't get a warranty.

Heritage Stealth in .40
Republic Patriot in .45
EAA Witness polymer compact in either caliber
Taurus Milennium in .40
Kel-Tec P40 in .40

Any advice on choosing between these?

Dave, I can't attest to shooting any of your mentioned guns, But before I recently purchased my used Glock 27 I looked at the Taurus and the Patriot. If I did not get the deal I got on the Glock I probably would have gone with the Taurus, I felt it had a better quality and it comes with a lifetime warranty. And tell your friend not to look away from a good used deal.Sometimes you can get a better bargain then new even though it don't have a warranty :)

Hope this helps :)

David,
I have a Taurus PT101 .40 that I've had almost 10 years and it is an EXCEPTIONAL pistol. I've never owned a Taurus revolver, but their autos are first rate. I think your friend would be well served with the Taurus.

Ditto and ditto. Terri just recently purchased a used (mint ;)) Taurus PT92 (her first gun) and I was impressed with it. Tight groups, good fit and finish, over all a very nice piece. Taurus has also taken a hard stand in the wake of the suits and the "agreement".
As a side note the Taurus warranty applies to all their guns not just the orginal owner.

Her's set her back $325 after some serious dickering on her part at the gun shop. ;)
