Photos and Videos Banned at Gun Club

I got a notice today the gun club I belong to is proposing to ban ALL photos and videos (not approved by the board of directors prior) to be posted on any social media under penalty of the law.
That would include the pictures I enjoy posting on Facebook of my family shooting ect.
I understand their concerns. I would never post anything unsafe, scary or stupid putting the club members or the club in a bad light.
But, this day and age :( I guess it's a concern.

Under penalty of law? Under penalty of what law? That's the question I'd be asking, because I'm entirely unaware of any law that prohibits posting of gun club photos on social media.

Is this a private club? Does it ban the taking of the pictures and video, or simply the posting? There's a pretty significant difference, legally speaking, between the two.

Yeah, ummm, if I belonged to a club that tried to prohibit me from posting my pictures, taken with my phone, to my social media accounts, from my own phone or computer . . . . we might just have a difference of opinion on that.

It is a private club. An excellent one :)

It reads it would ban the posting on social media without prior approval. Not the taking specifically.

Violations would be punitive both legal and / or otherwise. Whatever that means.

Note this is only a proposal at this time.

It basically seeks to ban all photos or videos not approved by the board of directors from being seen by any non-members.

To include "private" postings on Facebook, Twitter, ect all.

This sounds like someone posted a photo/video that redflected badly on shooting/shooters and/or
the club specifically. Given some of the things now seen on YouTube, I can sympathize.

Has anyone contacted the Club Board to get insight of what caused the notice?

What "law" are they referring to?

They are probably trying to stretch and claim that they have a right to control all images and videos of club property. Since it would be really hard to get a photograph of people without getting pics of club property in the background, they are using that as the basis of their arguement.

1. Good luck with that.
2. if this is an issue, tell them what you think of it and quit.
3. Why are they (the gun club) on your FB in the first place?

An excellent club?? One that is proposing to threaten you with legal action for posting images? I see a real disconnect there.

I would be finding another club.

If this were an issue I would agree.

Interestingly, the last outdoor competetion we were at, we were being annoyed by the mosquito sound of a drone overhead, filming our competition for the club's PR.

If you're from the Gulf Coast, the sound of what appears to be a really large mosquito near your neck is... disconcerting.

Well let's think about what that could mean.

I can't see any way you could be prosecuted for any sort of criminal offense for posting photos without club approval. But, if this were properly adopted as a club rule in a manner consistent with the by-laws of the club, a violation could give the club grounds to toss someone out of the club.

It's also possible, although a bit of a stretch, that someone who objected to your posting a photo of him could successfully pursue a civil invasion of privacy claim. But that would always be the case, whether or not the club adopted the rule, or whether or not the club approved the posting of a photo.

I'd have to agree.

If there are unsafe, scarey and/or stupid things going on there they don't want others to see, their concern is misdirected if they think that just keeping the public from seeing them is going to change things.

The gun club is not on my Facebook and they would be hard pressed to know if I posted a picture taken on club property there. I believe the concern was folks with open Facebook and other open media.
There was also a rule already in place that news media and official police, political visits ect must be approved and accompanied by authorized club officers.
I do have liberal and anti-gun friends/family members on FB. If they betrayed my trust they could take my pictures or videos and make them public.
This is the best, largest, well run range within driving distance of me. I love shooting there. They have indoor plumbing lol :D
While I don't know the reason for this proposal - I would not quit the club for this one rather Draconian rule.
Note at this stage its only a proposal.
The club not for profit with the board members ect donating their time.

Its a very safe range I am sure this is not the case.
They do allow day shooters - so the public has limited access to two ranges.
One never knows.
I believe they are being pro active.
Very rigid and safe firing line protocol and attentive range officers.
Full members have access to some unsupervised ranges that are under video surveillance at all times. Range officers still periodically, physically inspect them.
For the record, I would I not take a picture of an unsafe act, I would be too busy stopping it or getting a range officer to.

I could see where some members might object to photos or videos being publicly posted which show them with firearms. They may have legitimate concerns about thieves. Just think of those members here who do not like disclosing how many firearms they own or posting photos of firearms without obscuring the serial numbers. Some employers or co-workers might also be hostile to a gun owner.

That said, I think the proposal is still overly strong. Just make it a violation of club rules which can lead to suspension or loss of membership.

It's Gateway Rifle and Pistol Club Jacksonville,FL

I used to belong to that club - way back in the mid '80s when I was stationed at Mayport. We were always underway so much that I seldom got a chance to go out and shoot.:(
