Phoenix HP22 misfire, firing pin??

I just picked up a used Hp22 and took it out plinking and it misfired several times. Sometime on the second or third strike it would fire. I looked at some of the empty cases and the dent left by the firing pin looked very lite to me. Do I need to replace the firing pin and spring? If so how do you take the rear plate off the slide to get to them?

IIRC, the HP 22 is hammer fired, with a strut and spring that fit down in the rear of the grip. If the misfires are due to a weak spring, it is the hammer spring (aka mainspring) that would be the problem, not the firing pin spring, which holds the firing pin back rather than propelling it forward.

There should be a screw holding that end plate on; remove it and the plate slides down, again IIRC. Watch out, as the firing pin and spring can pop out and get lost.

Gun Parts Corp. (www.gunpartscorp.com) has parts for that gun.

I have had two of these in in th shop lately. One was miss firing and the other was not feeding cartridges from the magazine. The take down latch was bent up and was not letting the slide close fully on the one that was miss firing. The other one had a bad burr on the magazine follower. The magazine spring was installed backwards and the feed lips on the magazine were to tight. I also had to restake the magazine extension to keep it from falling off.

Thanks for the quick response. Next two questions. How do you change the main spring? Looks like a tight spot. Second, What size Allen wrench is the screw on the back plate to access the firing pin? I assume it's an Allen wrench??

I really pity you for owning that pistol... I have one too and it's such a junker that I don't think I would send it back to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. They have no trade-in value, confusing safeties, and worst of all, they are made of really soft metal. Mine is actually more reliable now that the slide has cracked near the extractor. I figured out that there is really only one good purpose for the HP22: A disposable gun that would likely melt in a very hot fire. Sad but true.

Autopistola,
I am sorry that you feel that way. This is my second hp22 that I bought used and it had the problems when I bought it. I still have my first hp22 that I purchased new over 12+ years ago and I have never had any problems whatsoever. It has been an excellent shooter. I also own an S&W 22A that I love. In my opinion they are both great guns. I personally know people that own more spendy guns and they have problems just the same. Remember the old saying. "Never buy a car made on Monday for Friday." Maybe yours was made on one of those days. In the gun world we don't know which day our gun was made on so it's a crap shoot. I am sorry that you got a bad one but I love mine and always will!

Autopistola,

I forgot to mention. Go ahead and send it in and they will repair or replace for free and they usually throw in a free mag or two. I won't cost you anything more that postage one way and some time.

I have one that been great 2000 rnds no problem Take down & back together littel tricky But awlful accurate I out shot a Rugger MK111 He could not beleave it He shot mine as good as He shot his All American Eagle ammo:D

Thanks, maybe I'll try that and sell the repaired piece. It's just a pain to pay for shipping and comply with all the special Cali laws.

Update

About a week ago I called Phoenix Arms and ordered 4 recoil springs and 2 sear springs and a manual. Today in the mail I got 6 recoil springs and 2 sear springs and no manual. They must have been out. Oh, By the way did I mention that when I placed the order I was ready to give them my ccard info and they told me it was all NO CHARGE as in FREE! I couldn't believe it. I replaced the recoil spring and the sear spring and went out to test the gun out. It shot perfectly! No failures! I shot CCI mini mags, CCI Blazer and the bulk Federal hollow points from Wally world. I am totally Jazzed! The gun works great now. Thanks for all your input on this gun issue.

Light firing pin strike...

My HP-22 was purchased in the mid 90's. It has work fine until recently. It seems to fire the first round after hand charging, but the second round gets a light firing pin strike, if it gets one at all. I gather the firing pin/spring combination is similar to most single action autos with an external hammer. The spring keeps the firing pin to the rear until the hammer strikes it and drives it forward. The spring then returns the pin to it's rearward position upon the hammer being re-cocked. Depending on the length of the firing pin it can either be full length or inertial (like the 1911A1). Is this correct?

On my pistol, the spring appears to be very week and if I push the firing pin manually with the tip of a screwdriver, it fails to return to the rearward position. Does this sound like just a bad firing pin spring spring?

pevans return issue

could be a weak spring but could also be nasty in there we have the same problem with the berettas after a while and I have to rip the whole slide apart to get in there...may want to consult a gunsmith as saftey detents and springs and little pieces may go flying.
