Phoenix Arms HP22a

Picked it up yesterday and took it to the range today. Put 200 rounds of standard velocity CCI through it without any issues. It is a heavy little guy, the action is a bit stiff which I am sure will loosen up over time, the magazine safety is ridiculous and the magazines stick to the point I have to pull them out of the gun, my Kahr CM9 did this to a certain extent as well but is now very smooth after working it a bit, I imagine the same will hold true for the HP22.
The trigger is better than I would have expected as well as its accuracy. I am not going to sit here and say that the quality is on par with a $300-$400 rimfire, I am sure it is not, but I will say that its accuracy is every bit as accurate as the more expensive offerings of the same size and barrel length if I do my part.
If you are in the market for a cheap semi auto range toy I would recommend giving it some consideration.

Greetings, they are nice guns, I have many(thousands) of rounds through mine, with no problems! Be sure to keep it clean and well lubricated, and always use standard velocity ammo. The frame and slide are zinc alloy castings, hence the weight, however Phoenix plates them with some type of hard nickle, and I allways use grease on the slide/frame rails, and there is still no wear visible. Enjoy your Phoenix!
Regards

Glad to hear you like yours. I will keep it clean, I am kind of OCD when it comes to my firearms, I break them down as far as I can to clean them before their first range outing and then a field strip after every range outing. Yeh I figure I will just stick with the recommended standard velocity. I have about a 1000 rounds of it, which is kind of a shame because I have around 2500 rounds of the high velocity Federal and CCI, guess I will just keep that food for the revolver and rifle.

I ve had two, one made a couple thousand rounds before I swapped it off, my second cracked the frame at around 400..

I ordered the 5" barrel but couldn't see any gain on accuracy, the 3" was very accurate.

I know their cheap. But over years Ive read more good things than bad about them . Most say a really accurate pinker.

Cheap pistols . I feel have a place in this country Not every one can afford several 100 dollars for a new or even used name brand. Or wants to spend that kind of money. A little 22 in house better than a No !! Stay away any day.

I know a older man that carries a Jimenez Arms 380 back pocket every where . Says never had 1st problem . I seen him shot it I don't want him shooting at me. He also carries a 32 Cobra derringer in jacket pocket. He considers him self well armed . I won't disagree .

Around 12 years ago I bought a FIE SA western type 22 revolver used from a friend who needed money. He had bought used. No telling how many owners . Every one in family has shot it . some 1st pistol . I carry some times in woods behind house. . It has taken out several pests over years and still accurate and reliable today as day I bought.

A close friend of mine has one.

It is one of the two very worst pistols I have ever fired.

I don't know what was wrong with it, but it was severely defective. At best, it would fire three rounds in a row before malfunctioning. At worst, it would choke on every single round in the magazine. And then a different malfunction every time.

Accuracy was so poor you might as well put the pistol away, turn around, and throw the rounds over your shoulder. That's about the only way to keep it from malfunctioning. When firing it, the safest place in the world is the soda can in the sights. It's probably safer behind the soda can than behind the pistol!

It can't fire hyper-velocity rounds without cracking the frame, either.

On the plus side, some people don't get lemons. But a lot do.

As for cheap .22's, I'd avoid it. There are still plenty of <$200 used H&R or High-Standard .22 revolvers out there. That, or donate plasma for a week and get a Ruger 22/45 for $100 more.

Hi Toney, on the one that cracked after 400 rounds, was that due to high velocity .22's? Just curious, I do plan on sticking with the standard stuff but will closely watch the frame.

I don't know if it was the ammo, but I touched the thin metal on the frame at the top of the mag well thinking how thin it was and it moved... and that's where the cracks started.

I shot everything in my first one and never got a crack.
