I knew better, but I did it anyway.
My son went to the gunshow with me a couple of weeks ago.
He wanted to buy a handgun, but he wanted to stay around $100.
(He's a college student. :( )

You can imagine what we had to choose from:
Davis derringers, Jennings J22, Davis .380, etc.
I did see one dealer with a Phoenix HP22? that I thought was new for $99.
After talking to him, he said it was used, but he had personally fired it to make sure it functioned. (Yeah, right. ;) )

I had read a lot of good stuff here about the Phoenix, so we bought it.
My usual procedure would be to fire the gun that evening, in case I had a problem and had to go back to the show the next day.
Well, my son had a busy schedule, and so did I. It was a week before he had a chance to shoot it.

As you can guess, he couldn't get through one mag full without a jam.
Tried 3 different types of high velocity ammo.
I got the number from the receipt and called the dealer.
- "This number has been disconnected."-

Long story short - I called Phoenix, though the instruction manual says the life-time warranty applies to original owner only. The gunsmith asked if the gun was used. I could have lied, but I said "Yes". He said "Send it in. We'll fix it. No charge.".

We got a new gun back, and it functions like a dream.
I sent in the gun with one chewed up magazine, and got back two new ones.

The safeties are a hassle, but it functions, feeds Federal bulk and CCI hi velocity, and was surprisingly accurate.

I like stories with a happy ending.

New HP-22s go for about $100 and you can get the kit with 5 inch barrel and extended mag for about $32 more. So you overpaid but came out OK. I am waiting for extra mags from Phoenix. I ordered five and they are pretty damn slow getting here.

My wifes first gun was a phoenix HP22. I figurerd if she didnt like shooting I could stand to lose 100 dollars. that was 2 years ago, now she has a CZ75 Compact, a Smith Model 66 and a G19. Guess she liked shooting. That little phoenix ate alot of rounds and was finally given to my nephew for plinking. Cant count how many bricks of 22 he has put through that gun and its still going.......not bad for a hundred bucks

Drakejake,
I had ordered some new mags about 3 weeks ago, before I decided to call about getting the gun repaired.
I called today, and they hadn't shipped my order yet.
The lady said they were waiting on new target barrels to be delivered, so they weren't filling any orders???
Since I had two new mags now, I had them tear up my order.

The best price for a new HP22 around here is $140.
We got the dealer down to $90, then sales tax, and background, put final cost around $108.

UPS shipping back to Phoenix, $30.

Knowing my son has a reliable .22................
priceless.
