Philadelphia Police REVOLVERS

Last weekend I attended the Army – Navy game in Philadelphia and spent considerable time in line for a thorough (uniformed division of the USSS) security inspection, resulting from the President’s attendance. While standing around with law enforcement officers everywhere, I noticed more-than-a-few Philadelphia cops carried .357 magnum revolvers, principally Smith L and N frames, several Ruger GP-100s, and perhaps a few old Colts. Incidentally, these Philadelphia LEOs were NOT all old guys; most were probably in their thirties. Obviously, Glocks predominated, but a surprising number of officers carried revolvers.

I've noticed that too. I am from the 'burbs but frequently in the city for school and see quite a few police at the convenience store across the street. I haven't asked them about what they are carrying. Maybe I will if a have a few minutes next time.

How about the Secret Service. I saw the President at a campaign stop in September. Waited an hour to get in. I was impressed with the efficiency and speed of their search. I got a chuckle at the pile of nail files and key chain leatherman type tools on the ground:)

I would ventue a guess, but I imagine that the Secret Service is mandated to carry autos, just for the sheer firepower, quickness of reloads, etc. The job of the SS is a bit different than that of a regular police officer, and it's a federal agency. (I dont think FBI is allowed revos for primary weapon, I think they issue sigs)

I would be very reluctant to trust my liae to a Glock. I would feel much better csrrying an N or L frame S&W .357 Magnum.

Actually you are witness to a low budget. PPD simply put detectives in uniform for the day. When a officer makes detective, the PPD no longer issues uniform duty gear. Those duty rigs and revolvers were vintage gear. USSS is rumoured to be going to FN Five Seven sidearm and SMGs.

The Secret Service guys get all the fun toys.
Remember when Reagan was shot? One of the protection detail was caught on tape pulling his Uzi from under his suit jacket (the ultimate CCW?). When Nixon was stumping for someone here in CA once, I saw one member of his detail was carrying a pair of Ingram M10's in a dual shoulder rig with short mags in it. (Please don't ask how I managed to see this. :o ) And when the Klintons registered Chelsea at Stanford my former boss was a reserve sheriff's deputy and said some of the agents were carrying MP5s.

If Klinton says we dont need guns, why......

is his Secret Service detail carrying ones we can't even afford to obtain? Protection? He should just dial 911. Methinks lead by example has left the building.

I trust my life with a Glock daily, and will continue to do so.

My 22 has 4,000-5,000 rounds through it without a single hiccup. Not once did the gun not go bang, eject, and go bang again. You must obviously either never shot a Glock extensively, or must be a prejudiced Sig owner. Otherwise you would appreciate that they are one of the most reliable guns ever made.
