Petty Theft - RANT

<rant>
We live in a pretty decent neighborhood. However, this past Saturday evening our cars had a few items stolen out of them. Right out in front of our house. Dog woke my wife up at 3:00am. She went to investigate and turned on the front porch light. Don't know how many times I've told her to wake me up first (I can sleep through any noise but turn on a light and I wake right up.)

Anyway, by the time she wakes me up the three "suspects" have fled and she's calling the sheriff. 3-5 minutes. Seemed like an eternity. Stole a cell phone, face plate for one of the stereos, and a $6.00 first aid kit. More than likely it was these teenagers who keep cutting through our yard and think behind our shed is their personal party area.

Security lights (with motion detectors) are going up as soon as I have someone to hold the ladder. My wife wants to put up an electified fence. I think the next time she hears the dog barking at someone she might rememeber to wake me up.

While I wouldn't shoot at anyone for stealing property, I'm sure they'd piss their pants when they hear the shotgun racking and "WHO'S OUT THERE"

And to top it all off, the next day the sheriff comes buy to take our report and one of these punk a$$ed teenagers is cutting through our yard (AGAIN). So my wife had the sheriff talk to him. He told us to call them the next time and they'll write them up. Second time they come out they'll arrest them for trespassing. (snicker, snicker, I like paying taxes for that.)

Can't wait till it gets warmer (they cut through the yard so they can go play basketball at this one kids house.) Actually would rather get a fence up so they'll stop cutting through the yard.

oh well, live and learn.

As an idea of the workload for many PDs, I have read that in NYC, the police won't bother to take a report unless the total value exceeds some $4,000. Just too many complaints to deal with.

At one time in Abilene, Texas--circa 1980, the SO would not come for a report of a burglary after the first event. Only after a second event. You could mail in a report, or come to the Office, but they just did not have the manpower to deal with the number of events of one sort or another which occurred every day.

You are indeed lucky that they came out...

"Good fences make good neighbors", it is said in farm/ranch country. Think about it.

It seems just like yesterday I was the kid cutting through the backyards LOL. We had the same problem here a few months ago, some kids stole some stuff out of my car right in our driveway! It sure would be nice to have a little 'chat' with them wouldn't it? ;) Good luck!

Quick solution for the cutting through the yard problem...
Put up some black shade cloth strung between 3" palings set 4' apart.
At night time it's totally invisible & a real fench jumper catcher ! ;)
I did it & no more problems<bg> :D

Havent had anybody try to jump the fence since my Akita/Shep mix grew up. At 90+# she puts out a lot of slobber and could possibly drown someone :), but all everyone sees is a big dog running at them. My only problem is with the mail boxes. The retards walkin gto school like to open them up as they walk by each home. When we first moved in they actually took out some sutff. Local PD came out and scared the piss out of the kids doing the stealing. Now they just open the boxes. Dont know how to stop that as I'm never around when it happens.

I suppose I'm naive, but isn't it even an option to find out where the kid lives and have a talk with his parents anymore? Didn't the cop even offer to do that?

If you catch one, tell him you're sorry he has such $#itty parents but that's no excuse for acting like an a$$#ole. Sorry, my .02.

Problem is the parents are often part of the problem. Will get upset at you bothering their kids. In my area we know who is doing some of the not so petty thefts. Just can't prove it. :( :( It is to bad we can't let people cut across our property but this is the result.
