Cindy Adams gossip column
PETER FONDA, now in the kids' movie "Thomas and the Magic Railroad," has very grown up political ideas. Considering the GOP hoo-hah begins this weekend in Philly, I wound Peter up and let him go.
"I'd make a good president. I'd be honest. I know about all that other stuff, why nobody should do this or that, because I've been there.
"I don't want to be president, but I would if there's such extraordinary emergencies that our already bad infrastructure totally breaks down. In that case I'd not hesitate to declare martial law. I'd call on every governor to call out their National Guard.
"I'd get rid of the whole government, then replace both houses so life continues, since mail has to be delivered, food must be disseminated. I'd disallow anyone to re-run for office, limit all political campaigns to $50,000, and all public service to two terms. I'd disallow the perks public servants give themselves. I'd pass a law that no state can bury a pet project in a bill. Say a bill on education. No local pols can attach to it some pork-barrel law that helps a few voters in the home state.
"I'd fire every federal judge because they're the most corrupt of the bunch. Not all were lawyers. Few understand the law. And lawyers don't even recall how to interact with our social system. I'd keep in place only the Supreme Court. I'd lock them into their building. They'd slip papers out to me, I'd slip meals in to them - until they could put democracy in place.
"Once I'd readied the new infrastructure and seen that we'd all returned to the Bill of Rights, I'd go back to my ranch in Montana and hope I get another movie."
Peter Fonda for president.
