Pet Peeve... Reply W/ Quote

Just a little rant, guys...
The little icon with the page and the little red arrow called reply with quote - it's kind of an annoying feature of this UBB software.
When you click that icon you add basicaly the entire post your replying to into your reply... This is not cool. We are not such a dense lot that this redundancy is needed... Now, if this was a Rosie forum, I could see it's use.

Near the TOP Right and near the Bottom Left, are buttons for reply or post new topic... It would be very nice if everyone could use those exclusively.

It is of course perfectly OK for one to copy and quote a PART of a post... but the WHOLE THING?

Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings; they did it by killing all those who opposed them.

Good point
IMHO the only exceptions might be when the topic extends into a second page or the original topic is closed due to bandwidth and a part 2 is started.
I glad that there aren't too many who abuse/over use the little icon...

...defend the 2nd., it protects us all.
No fate but what we make...

I was about to reply with a quote of both your posts, but then I was afraid of what I might start. I too find this pretty annoying, especially when we first had it and people would quote an entire page just to add "This is so true! Thanks DC!" or some such thing.

I fully agree that it's very annoying, and would like to see it removed. If we need to respond to a particular part of a quote, we can cut and paste.

However, as you see above, it is certainly possible to delete the extraneous portions of the missive you're replying too, leaving only the "meat." If y'all MUST use "Reply With Quote," please weed out that part that you don't really need. George says he minds the drag, but what does he care? That sorry sap's cruisin' at T1!!! Take pity on us poorly-begotten wretches who have 56k modems which yeild, according to my 3Com Modem Manager, a whopping 38 kilobaud of speed. (Woooooo hoooooo! We're talking the .41 Rimfire of telecommunications!)

Regards,

Matt/L.P.

I personally think the “Reply with Quote” feature is useful when used correctly. Specifically, what Long Path said and strip out the parts that are not pertinent to your post.

However folks can always “Quote” manually if desired.

I'm with Long Path....I like it because you don't have to mess with UBB code. It goes without saying that you should remove all but the pertinent part of the quote.

When I read George's thread title, I thought he wanted us all to reply with quotes!

Here's mine:

Just doing my part to raise the surrealism factor around here....

Reply With Quote is much like firearms, in that it's not the tool that's the problem, but the way some people misuse the tool, by accident or design.

Now for some more surrealism...

"Dawn. A light mist covers the valley and my stand. All is quiet and still as I set out my Sensop bait.

kframe19 - It wasn't just you my friend - there are many who have done this...
It happens.
You are forgiven... Go and sin no more...
For those who quote with out thought - I would that they tried a little harder to respect poor Long Path's lowly modem...

Mis D - you need a spanking...
