Permit holders: can LEO's run your plates to ID you?

I'm just wondering which states give LEO's the ability to find out if the owner of a vehicle has a permit by just running the plate number.

Wisconsin's new CCW bill would make it necessary for an LEO to first run the plate to get the name of the registered owner, then make a second call to a different system to find out if that person had a permit.

Any information is much appreciated.

Oregon does. The sheriff issues the permit so it is in the Sheriff's computer. I don't know if it's in the State or Local Police computer or if the Sheriff's computer is linked to them.

It's also all linked to your license, just in case you're not in a vehicle but are asked to show ID.

Ohio does too.

My wife found this out when she got pulled over for speeding not long ago. The police officer came back up to her window at the end of the stop and said, "So, your husband has a carry permit..." She said yep. He gave her the ticket with a grunt and walked away.

I have no idea whether Florida does or not, but if they do, then it's happened to me at least four times.

I don't get pulled over often, but I have been pulled over let's see... 6 or 7 times in the 8 years I've been living here. I had my permit for all those times. Of those times, I've been issued a citation only 3 times.

Last night, in fact, was the last time I was pulled over. It was 3 a.m., and I was leaving the Walmart parking lot, pulling out onto a four lane road with a median. I happened to get out in front of the only car that was coming down my side of the road -- a Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputy. (I couldn't see that it was a PBSO car just by the headlights.) I didn't cramp him, or cause him to have to brake, but when I crossed the next intersection and put on my signal to get gas at a station there, on came his lights, and I pulled over inside the station lot.

I remained in my car with the window closed, and placed my hands at about 11 and 1 on the steering wheel.

When the deputy came to the window and knocked, I raised my left hand, pointed at the window button, and then clicked it to Auto and it rolled down. I said Hi or something. He was decked out in full gang-division garb, with a Taser on the front of his vest and all. He immediately started to impugn me for rolling through the stop sign in the Walmart lot where it exited onto the roadway. I put on a sort of, "I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking" kind of attitude and didn't really deny (or admit) that I had blown a stop sign. Mentioned something about how my mind was really on getting gas and what it was gonna cost me. He asked for license and reg. and took them back to his car before I could give him my, "Officer, I have a clean license and really would appreciate it if you could give me a break," speech -- which has worked in the past. (If you don't ask to be not given a ticket, you will be given a ticket. You gotta ask!)

When he came back to my car, he handed back my license and registration, and the first words out of his mouth were, "This one's on me." Proceeded to tell me that the violation woulda cost me $118, blah blah blah.

Then he shocked me. He ACTUALLY SAID HE APPRECIATED THE FACT THAT I HAD MY HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN HE APPROACHED THE CAR!

I could barely believe it! I had him there a few more seconds while I told him that I always believed that a motorist should do whatever is necessary to keep a cop at ease, since I understand the risks of what he does. I told him that I had always wondered if officers had an appreciation for people who conduct themselves politely and predictably when stopped.

Apparently they do, and not only that, they may let you off! :)

But the deputy NEVER mentioned anything about my CCW license.
I was left to wonder if maybe he was aware of it, and likes a motorist who is that kind of "good guy." I also have my NRA Life Member sticker on the back, along with various others like skydiving dropzone stickers, and AOPA and USPA. Maybe if a cop relates to you, or respects your affiliations, he will be nicer to you. I dunno.

Something similar happens in Tennessee, although I'm pretty certain it is from the license, not the plate...our HCP number is the same as the driver's license number.

In WA, it's a patchwork and whether or not the LEO can get the info really depends on the jurisdiction.

This is just my opinion, but I believe, in Texas, when you are pulled over,
your plate number is cross-referenced to a drivers license number, which
is cross-referenced to a social-security number (required for a drivers license) which will indicate a
concealed carry license, or not.
However they do it, there is no doubt in my mind that when a cop
pulls you over in Texas, he already knows if you have a concealed carry
permit.

My understanding is that in Texas, if you have a permit and you are carrying a gun when you get pulled over, you HAVE to VOLUNTEER the information that you are licensed and carrying.

Cops dont need to run me, when i get pulled over i hand over my license and like a good responsible law abiding gun owner pipe up with "officer I have a permit to carry and a gun (here or there or everywhere), what would you like me to do"...

Works like a charm

Virginia does...but mine is kinda obvious anyway :D

In Texas when the the Officer runs your Drivers Liscense you CHL automatically pops up. In fact you must prestn your CHL with your Liscense, if you dont you can get a suspension.

Florida, no. If they run your drivers license it may show up depending on how they run it. I contacted my county sheriff and asked about it, that was his response. I also asked what their policy was when dealing with CCWs and he stated each situation is different and it's up to the LEO how to deal with it.

in mississippi you only have to show your permit if asked for it. you do not have to say you have a gun unless asked. if you are in your car though it doesn't matter as open carry and vehicle carry are legal for anyone over 18 whether they have a permit or not.

A NC CHP has the same number as your Drivers License number. So it comes right up when your license is run. I do not know what happens when your plates are run.

What I would like to know is if my DL number will show the CHP to an out of state LEO?

Wyoming yes - run the plate, than the owners name for the DL. CCW info come up with the DL - can't run out of state DLs this way, just instate.
