Penney's Catalog

My wife and I and my youngest were in a retro clothing store to get a costume for the wife's office halloween dress up day. I just happened onto a JC Penney's catalog from 1975. Guess what......... They sold guns then. Long guns and mostly shotguns.
Those were the days!

My brother in Law has an old Sears & Roebuck catologue, I don't know what year, earlier than the 20's I think?? It's hilarious the price of things.
Shotguns for $8.50 Winchester lever action hunting rifles for $12. Colt revolvers between $6 and $10. I look through that magazine, and it makes my mouth water. I want to buy one of everygun, and you know they're worth lots and lot's nowaday. They also used to sell food, and it was like 1 to 3 cents a can!! Oh man, those were the days.

And Wards, Sears et all.

Prior to the 68 sell out the local hardware store, feed store, general store were all places friendly to shooters.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

With wages at 25 cents an hour, for a GOOD job, you can have the good ol' days. I used to think I'd been born 50 years too late. Then I studied a little non-revised American History. No thanks.

It is fun to see those old adverts, though. :) Like "Second Shots", last page before the inside cover in every issue of the American Rifleman: 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago.

Ummm, think anybody a few years from now is going tto say the same thing about K-Mart? Yeah, I know, wah wah wah, K-Mart had Rosie, baaaaad blue light store. Well guess what?
It had little to do with anything other than public pressure and BATF tightening to force a lot of these stores to "sell out". Woolworths used to be a great place to buy guns. Mausers were selling for $39.95 each for all you could carry out of the store. That was in the good old days of 1987. My how times have changed! I haven't bought anything from Wards, Pennys, Ace Hardware and any number of other previous gun sellers that sold out or caved in years. Sorry to dump on you folks, but the frustration level is over my head about now. Everybody seems to think that an "agent" ala Matrix or DOJ ninjas are going to come knocking for their guns. Ain't going to happen that way. As far as I can tell, nobody has got theirselves killed in a one on one with apathy yet. Why bother to risk lives when we gun owners can do the job ourselves, ya know? Apathy and lack of interest. Yep. The weapons of choice for the opposition. :( Tell me something, please, how do you find the range or sight in on discord, apathy, lack of interest or just plain old greed? Thats what you/I are up against.

sensop,
Amen bro. The good old days are fine memories, but today is tomorrow's memory. F it. I goin shootin while I can.

While browsing an out-of-town library last year (waiting for web time) I believe it was a 1967 Sears cataloge that I found which had surplus M-1's available, AT THE STORE OR THROUGH MAIL ORDER (you had to sign the order form that you were 21). Keep it in mind next time you hear that guns are more available now than at any other time in history.

Remember when Sears used to do more than tires and batteries on cars?

I collect antiques including old magazines and papers. found some checks in a house...dated from the '40's and 50's...written and signed in pencil.

Also, did you realize that Lysol used to make douche? Gotta have that pine fresh scent. :D

I remember when Penney's got out of the sprting goods part of the store. Guns were being sold at 10 percent above cost. Employees got 15 percent off that price. My wife worked at Penney's. I got a 94 Winchester for $95, a Marlin 336 for $110, and a Remington 700 BDL for $210, plus a couple of Redfield 1 3/4x5X scopes for $85 each. There was some other small stuff, but I forget what they were. My cup runneth over and my credit card was maxed out. :)
