Not sure if this is the right place, so if it isn't feel free to move it to the right one.

I was wondering what you all thought of the Penn Foster Gunsmith Program.

Here's a link to the program outline:

For those of you who don't know, it's one of those online learn in your own home at your own pace deals. I enrolled in it on a whim and was wondering what you all thought of it, did I waste my money?

It costs about $750 in total, and seems to have a pretty good set up. Not a real degree, but you do get a "Career Diploma" when you finish.

I've completed a few of the lessons, and found them to be pretty well set up. Not sure what I'll do with it after I'm done, probably just use the knowledge to do as much of the work on my own guns as possible so I don't have to pay someone else to do it.

I'll also probably do some work for others, as a way to add extra income, and who knows, maybe I'll like the work so much it becomes my main career:)

Let me know what you think of it.

rburch: I dont know much about them, but many moons ago I took a correspondence gunsmithing course through Modern Schools of America. It wasnt very good. The lesson plans were vague and had no pictures to go by. So I havent been really enthused about correspondence class's.

Recently, due to a OTJ injury which required me to retire, I started looking around again. I chose American Gunsmithing Institute. I liked having the instructor showing your how to do things on video in relation to the lesson plans. Like they say, A picture is a worth a thousand words. There customer assistance is great also. They have been very helpful. Hope this is helpful

The lesson for this course seem pretty well thought out. They do an excellent job explaining the tasks, and there are pictures on almost every page.

That said one thing I did notice is their lesson on FFL has a disclaimer at the back that says, Laws and Regulations are subject to change, so the information in this lesson may not be up to date.

Out of curiosity I checked and that booklet was written in 1997.

Materials need updated every year! No disclaimer is acceptable.

On things like the FFL I agree, on things like how to appraise a gun to check it's value, mounting a scope, or carving and checkering a stock, I don't think it's that vital.
