peep sights on bolt actions?

I have a few C&R guns and I was thinking about getting peep sights put on one. Has anybody had this done? Or have any comment on the peep in general for hunting? It would almost double the sight radius and after shooting a FAL and AR the peep would seem to be a better sighing system than the notch.Thanks.

Well...you really have two different animals, you may be talking about here. One is the traditional peep sight, which has a very fine hole. The other is a larger inner diameter hole with a fairly thin lip. (This is the sight now described as a "ghost ring", because the rear sight tend to almost disappear from your conscious mind.)

The first is good for precision shooting. The second is good for quick shots. I have a done well with the rifles I have that use this system- superior to my abilities with traditional rifle sights.

One day, given time and money, ALL my rifles will have some type of peep sight, either the former or latter.

As my eyes have gotten older I have found peep sights very helpful. The ghost ring sights are great for hunting, in my opinion.

P.S. Just my eyes are getting old, not the rest of me.;)

The peep/ghost ring sights are in fact, the best 'iron' sights for rifles. The traditional barrel mounted rear blade sight is slower and less effective. The peep is faster, works better in poor light, and is more 'natural' to use. And if your eyes aren't the greatest, they work MUCH better. I've added peeps to a number of bolt rifles, and highly recommend them.

I hunted for years with peep sights on my rifles, a 1903A3 in .30-06 and a Savage 99 in .300.

As my eyes have gotten older, I've found them to still be a very good option. I'm moving more towards glass, though.

I was thinking of putting a peep on my hunting rifle just the other day.. however, I saw a couple of them needed to be mounted on the right side of the reciever, thus necessitating (Is that a word? ;)) the right side of the reciever to be drilled and tapped. That's a lot of work..

So, what I was wondering, are there any peep sights that mount to the top of the reciever? Or maybe scope rails? Scope rail holes? Something? :)

A peep is the way to go when the eyes get old and tired. I have them ready to go on all my rifles except a .22 or two. A lyman 57 IMHO is the best way to go. For precision shooting use it as is, for fast action or hunting unscrew the insert and it becomes a ghost ring. I had the insert come unscrewed out of the one on my Win. 69 .22 Cal. last year and did not suffer from it even though it took 2 months before I found it when I cleaned my boat! It was a lil coarser but faster. Take your choice. A peep is a great sight. Ask the armories. The 03A3, the Garand, the M14, the plastic wonder by Mattel, all have peeps. All but the last one are GREAT rifles.

I had long been a believer in aperture sights--Remington and Winchester 52 target rifles in high school, 1903A3, M1 carbine, AR15, M1A, Winchester 94, and others.

A short while back, I was REALLY impressed with the Savage Scout, which comes with possibly the best factory sight system I've seen on a sporting rifle. Received peep and a medium-fine gold bead front. Shot it quite a bit this way, while waiting for Leupold Scout scope and rings. VERY quick and was on target with GI ball right out of the box. Fun to ring the gongs and pop silhouettes that way.

Best.
